When I was younger people would always talk about the time change and how it was so hard to adjust and I couldn’t understand because it was never a problem for me, until now. This year “falling back” has me “falling over”. I’m not sure why, but I am dragging home from work, it’s nearly dark, and I just don’t have the energy to start on any of the projects I have listed. Instead, I chat with the 12 year old, play with the 2 year old, and my head hits the pillow right after they go to bed. So, sorry for being a little “absent” lately.
But I’m back with the plans for my next big project…a room for my 12 year old. He hasn’t had a real decorated bedroom for a few years since we were selling, moving, renting a vacation rental, and now finally in a new house. It’s been about 2 years. This is the jumping off point for the room. A picture he found at an antique mall.
He loves dogs and it is such a masculine print. It is framed in a black and gold frame with just a hint of red outlining the matting. This print is the jumping off point for the whole room. The room as a whole is going to be black, tan, and white with little touches of the red in the jacket and green of the grass. He has requested a black quilt for his bed. Not an easy task. The only one I can find that doesn’t look like it belongs in an uptown loft is this lovely one from Pottery Barn.
It looks really nice, but I confess the $250 price tag for the full size bed of a not quite teenager seems a little excessive. I think I will be doing some more surfing for the perfect black quilt. I did buy some great Ikea buffalo check fabric the other week when we were in Orlando at Disney. I think it is going to become the bed skirt for his bed, but it might end up on the window…not sure yet. It looks like this.
At $8.99 a yard for nice heavier fabric I figured I could hardly go wrong buying several yards of it. It looks so bright and fresh, adding a great pattern to the room. He has also requested the introduction of tan in the room which made me initially think of a classic Burberry plaid like this.
Perfect mix of colors right? I totally agree. I don’t want these two patterns to compete so one will be a main focal point in the room and one will be in there in a small way. I’m going to pull the dogs in to the mix by making a pillow that is personal. A while back I snapped this great picture of our dog Dixie.
I think I will have her groomed and then have a little photo shoot session with her. My plan is to upload a few of her images to Spoonflower (a company that prints your design on fabric). I will then have them print a yard of fabric for me with a few of her images on it that I can use to make pillows. I will sew the back of the pillows in a different fabric and will end up with personal pillows that will mean a lot to him. Something sort of like this pillow from LoveJoyCreate’s Etsy shop.
Or this hilarious one from BenWineWin’s Etsy shop. I mean, seriously, how funny is this? Totally cracks me up.
I’m still deciding on furniture for the room. We moved him from a 9×13 room to his current 10×11 room because we have big plans for the 9×13 room (more on that later). I will say it involves removing a wall in my brand new house (yikes!). Plus, the 9×13 room was so narrow it made furniture placement more of a challenge. Since he is moving up to a full size bed I am starting from scratch with mattress, headboard, bedding etc…. He has a great dresser in a traditional dark cherry with brass handles. In his other room he had two tall bookcases in a cherry finish. In this room, I think it will close the room in too much. But this kid has a LOT of books. So bookcases are in order, but I’m thinking something on the smaller side flanking his bed on each side. This is a clipboard of some of the items I think will be going into the room.
My hope is to have this completed by Christmas. I know, crazy right? But I want one room in this house “finished” so this seems like a small place to start. I will keep you updated on how things are going. Hope you are having a great week!

I know, lucky boy. Trying to get it all done because the little guy needs to move into a big boy bed so the older one gets to trade up. Talk about hand-me-downs…even the bed.
