I have a white subway tile dilemma…and you are just the person to help me solve it.
Yes, you.
You see, there is this battle going on in the design world and you are going to have to pick your side.
Remember back in 2008 where people were like Team Edward and other (crazy) people were like Team Jacob! ?
Well, the battle is brewing except the stakes are much higher. I’m talking white subway tile. It is still ruling the world. The flashy tiles come and go but subway tile has true lasting power.
Is it the price? Yes.
It is the clean style? Double yes.
Is it because it can take a sad tired space and make it sparkle again? Triple yes.
The tile patterns for subway tile are numerous but I’ve boiled it down to just three. It’s a modern day love triangle.
Team Herringbone vs. Team Brick vs. Team Diagonal Herringbone
What team are you going to choose? Me? I’m undecided. That’s why I desperately need your help.
I’m going to be installing white subway tile above this vanity as part of my bathroom remodel for the One Room Challenge. I need to decide quickly. It’s time for me to get off the fence and choose a team.
So do I go with the sensible brick pattern that is tried and true and always a classic? It’s sort of like my favorite sneakers…not flashy but always comfortable. I’ve never regretted wearing them.
Or do I go with the more trendy version herringbone pattern? It’s sort of like a nice kitten heel. Not extremely comfortable but gives a little extra style to the ensemble.
Maybe it should be the diagonal herringbone pattern? This is the five inch leopard print heel that looks incredible but gives you a blister by the end of the night. But it is so worth it!
I seriously need your help. I wouldn’t ask if I wasn’t really in need. Which pattern would you install in your bathroom? The long term sensible brick pattern? The somewhat trendy herringbone pattern? Or, the super stylish diagonal herringbone pattern? Inquiring minds what to know…
And for the record…I was Team Edward all the way. Right from the start. And no, it wasn’t weird that a nearly 40 year old woman was rooting for a fictitious “teenage” vampire. I kept my sanity. I didn’t buy the t-shirt. 🙂
Have a fantastic day!

We have white subway tile in the brick pattern for the kitchen and have never regretted the choice. I think the herringbone pattern would look really good in your bathroom though 🙂 Just saying…

I think what kind of tile pattern you put in should be driven by the style of everything else in the room. I think the diagonal herringbone is a bit much. I think the regular herringbone looks good with the smaller tiles – they will probably be more expensive than regular 3×6. If you go to a tile showroom (not Waterworks which is super expensive), you can find ceramic rectangular tile in different sizes the $3 range – a 6×8 or 6×9 is a nice more square rectangle. If you go with regular brick laid, you can make it feel more contemporary by using a dark gray grout. You can’t go wrong with brick laid!
