Do you know about oilcloth? I have been mildly obsessed with it for years, but it is really hard to come by. Basically, oilcloth is a cloth with a coating over it that makes it wipe-able, yet it doesn’t feel like vinyl. They make great tote bags for the beach. Like this one from Oilcloth Alley
There are a lot of applications for oilcloth. Martha Stewart, the queen of everything, has mastered the art of oilcloth (surprised?). I picked some of my favorite projects using oilcloth from her web site. Here are some great applications for it, straight from Marth Stewart.
The best selection of oilcloth I could find online comes from fabric.com Here are a few of my favorites from their site. Oilcloth is very affordable usually priced around $5 per yard.
True oilcloth doesn’t have a plastic feel, but more of a feeling that it is waterproof but still feels somewhat like fabric. I don’t know if that makes sense. You just have to feel good quality oilcloth once to understand what it feels like. If you are super picky on fabric choices, like me, you can make your own oilcloth. It’s no surprise that Martha Stewart created a way to make your own oilcloth. She has a decoupage medium you can use on any fabric to give it that oilcloth feel. This would be a great way to use the fabric you want on a kitchen chair or bar stool and not worry about the spills. Here’s the Video from Martha Stewart
The video makes it look so easy. I highly recommend watching it because you may think of some way to use it that no one else does!
This is a picture of the decoupage medium that provides an oilcloth finish to fabric. You can buy it at Michael’s. I haven’t tried it yet, but am so looking forward to turning some of my favorite fabrics into oilcloth. The possibilities are endless. Place mats, tote bags, lunch sacks, chair covers, beach bags, coasters etc…
Happy Tuesday!
