Each year Pantone, a trusted source for the design set crowd, releases the color of the year. It is supposed to be the color that really drives design. I’ll let you decide what you think about this year’s color…Marsala.
It’s a deep rich hue, for sure. I think I would really love it as a shade of lipstick and I have to say I am secretly hoping it translates to a darker lip coming back.

But in my home? I’m not sold yet. Of course, I do believe this moves along with the idea that the best of 80’s is going to be coming back our way. Brass animals have come back as seen in this photo promoting vintage brass animals by One Kings Lane.
There has also been a resurgence of plaid in both fashion and home design. It was very evident this past Christmas with all of the Tartan plaid everywhere. Does seeing it make you automatically smell Polo? For those of you old enough, oh yes, the smell of Polo is soooo 80’s. Why not go to the source himself, Ralph Lauren for a little plaid inspiration? It still looks 80’s to me.
I do love the fact that the Marsala color is not quite the maroon jewel tone of the 80’s but rather a little lighter feel to the same color. My personal feel is Marsala would best be paired with lighter neutrals, or, it should be paired with brighter contrasting colors. I would avoid going the 80’s jewel tones, even though navy/indigo has also be conquering the design world recently. The two should never meet.

What a beautiful room. Pairing it with the white and light beige makes it feel fresh and somehow airy. I would totally be able to live in this room. The rug…seriously. That sofa just screams luxury. On to a more budget-friendly look, this next room shows how you can pull the color in by putting a few inexpensive accessory pieces in to a room to pull the color in.

So, how can we pull this color into our homes without (a) breaking the bank, (b) re-doing a whole room, and (c)feeling like we are just jumping on the trend? I have to admit that I do love the color after looking at these rooms, but it’s just not “me” to pull it into a room in a strong way. Here are some suggestions for capturing “Marsala” in your home.
Okay, I know this isn’t a textile. But, I don’t know about you, but my nails are in my home every night. Maybe a good accessory?

It’s really easy to pull in a candle in the “it” color. Plus, if you don’t like it you burn it up, scent your house and call it done. Having a dinner party soon? Why not create a tablescape with Marsala as the focal color.
Pretty right? I could totally get behind some of these ideas for my home. I am using this in my home right now. My son’s room has a hint of the Marsala color in it as seen in this pillow.
I love it in his room but don’t think I could pull it in my living room in a big way. One thing I know…I will be wearing Marsala all the time. I love the color on me, not on my couch. What do you think about the new color of the year? Are you going to embrace Marsala? How would you use it in your room?
