Today I’m participating in a Waterside Home Tour hosted by Emily from Table and Hearth. For the first timers to Slightly Coastal, let me fill you in on a little bit about myself. We bought a standard builder grade new home two years ago on Amelia Island, Florida. It’s the smallest home we’ve ever owned and I’ve been trying to finish room by room adding in more character as I move through the house. Although I don’t have an ocean view (I’d need to add 500k to our current home), we are perfectly situated half-way between the ocean and the historic downtown.
I finished my two boys’ rooms right after we moved in because I wanted them to feel like they had a space that reflected them. They’re not particularly coastal, but more the style they wanted for their rooms.
So today I thought I would give you a tour of the two rooms I feel are completely finished in the coastal style I love and then give you a glimpse of some vignettes I have created that reflect my slightly coastal style.
Up first is my latest One Room Challenge room. It’s a fourth bedroom. Don’t even get me started on why this builder put four bedrooms in this home rather than three. We ended up with three tiny bedrooms and a good size master. I would have preferred all the bedrooms to be a better size. We decided to turn this fourth bedroom into a media room for video games and spill over when my oldest has friends over.
I love the mix of white with wood and little pops of black. It is my favorite combination along with a lot of texture in the room.
The other room I want to show you today is our master bathroom. I completed this room for the One Room Challenge also. Apparently, doing the One Room Challenge is the only way I completely finish a room. Although my friend Sheila up the street will tell you I’m never really finished with a room because I’m always changing something.
I totally have a thing for ceilings. This was my first adventure with doing a ceiling treatment. This is actually wallpaper on the ceiling. I love the texture of the board and batten, mixed with bead board and the wood wallpaper. It makes me happy every morning to walk into this bathroom with all the white and wood.
I love creating coastal vignettes in our house since the beach is such a part of our lives. Here are some of my favorites.
Thanks for stopping by and checking out our little island home. I have five more rooms to finish in this house, so if you love DIY come on back and check out what I’m working on. Be sure to visit all the other participants. The homes are truly inspiring.

Lovely home and lovely style! Love your soothing palettes with pops of color in your accessories. I think a coastal style is just the most fun style to play around with, don’t you? Happy summer!
Nancy says
I do love coastal. Like many styles it can go from simple to sophisticated. I love somewhere in the middle. Thanks Joanne!

HI Nancy-wow your home is looking incredible! I love the shutters behind the TV-always wondered what would add interest and not distract from the TV viewing. I am working with Janie on making the kitchen at school look better. years ago she found old restaurant booths-they are not looking so good and an ugly red. We are going to cover the seats not a problem but I wondered about the rest of the seat-what about chalk paint? Keeping in mind that the students will be using these-not sure how the wear and tear would be but how much fun would it be to wildcat blue the booths! Would there be any issues with it being in a kitchen area? Can’t wait to hear back and hope your summer is great!
Nancy says
Sarah! I hope you are having a great summer and finding some time to relax on the beach. I think you could for sure use chalk paint on the rest of the booth. It takes some time for the paint to cure and you would want to put a wax finish on it, but after it is cured it should hold up well.
Thanks for stopping by!

I am so happy to have come upon your Slightly Coastal. I can’t wait to see more of your home and projects. Although I am more landlocked in central Florida, I live in a coastal/low country style home and am still finding my decor style in the new to us home. I have subscribed as I a look forward to connecting to other Florida bloggers! I love the gray shiplap wall in your guest room and the ceiling in your bathroom, oh, swoon! I am pinning this to my home tours board!
Nancy says
Thanks Chloe! I’m happy you will be hanging out here with me. I love your blog! What inspiring setting and some great recipes in there too! I have been wanting to become more tuned in to the Florida Bloggers network. Maybe we’ll both attend an event.

I love your coastal style Nancy – what a cozy and inviting home you’ve created! Brilliant idea to turn the 4th bedroom into a media hangout room for the kids! So fun to join you on this tour – happy summer!
Nancy says
Thanks for hopping with us! Amazingly, since I did the 4th bedroom the teenage boys are more polite and just seem more grown up in the space. Funny how a little decorating will do that.

Hi Nancy!
Love your green, pink and blue color palette. Perfect for Florida with the bright bold shades, and sense of fun at the beach. Had to pin a few of your images, so darn cute and I think exactly what our coastal customers will enjoy!
