Did you know that…
-the chance of being struck by lightning this year is 1 in 960,000?
-the chance of finding a four leaf clover is 1 out of 10,000?
-the odds of winning an Olympic gold medal in a given Olympics is 1 out of 22 million?
–the chance of playing basketball for the NBA is 3 out of 10,000 if you play basketball in high school?
This is a post about chances, odds, and second chances …which I think are the best kind of chances out there.
As we turned onto 14th Street the other night, I was involved in a great conversation with my son about his future, his education, and the dreams for his life. Good stuff right?
At one point he told me when he grows up he’s going to have a YouTube channel and will have millions of subscribers who watch him play video games.
I responded that the chances of having that happening are about the same as becoming an NBA superstar…and my words lingered in the air between us. If I could’ve sucked the words back in I would have.
In one quick statement I had just dashed his dream…when he was confessing to me what his authentic life dream was …even though it sounded crazy to this mama.
As I drove down the street I felt it sink into my heart even more. This may be one of those moments that shapes him and he remembers it even when he is an adult…just like so many of us do.
Mine was discovering that I couldn’t be Annie on Broadway because we lived in Northern Minnesota and I’m not a very good singer. Facts like that don’t figure into dreams though. Dreams are fueled by hope…and for dreams to stay alive hope must remain intact.
I took a deep breath and gave myself a second chance. A second chance to say what I should have said. A second chance to build that crazy dream back up. A second chance to save him from a jaded world for just a little longer. A second chance to enjoy the excitement in his voice as he told me exactly how he was going to do it. I took my second chance…
…and passed the second chance on to him.
This sweet little table has also been given a second chance. She was beat up, watermarked, and nicked. But with the help of a buffalo check skirt and a new mirrored top she has a second chance to be beautiful again.
Second chances…the best kind of chance there are. It’s a hard knocked life…maybe we should do our best to hand out second chances whenever we can.

Haven’t we all benefited, at some point, from second chances? I’m so glad I have so many around me who have afforded me the grace.

I love that tailored table skirt. In the past I have had a couple of the fuller table skirts, but I no longer care for that look. This one is perfect!

Cathy, I couldn’t agree more. The structure doesn’t take up volume yet gives that pop of buffalo check I die for. Thanks for reading.

Love this story.
We all need a second chance and I wanted to be Annie, too!
The table is awesome, too. 🙂
