Okay, so one thing you should know about me is I can drift from project to project and when I’m about 75% done I tend to be bored of it. Not the best quality, for sure. I have been working on that weakness though. In January I resolved to FINISH all four bedrooms in our house this year. When I say finish, I mean finish. I know I am always going to go back and tweak and move things and I am okay with that. But, for the most part, I want each bedroom completed.
Lately, I have been distracted from my mission. Items seem to fall into my lap and I find myself decorating other rooms in the house. Then I get mad at myself for not sticking with the plan. But, sometimes it’s just too easy. Case in point, my master bedroom. This room is penciled in for the fall. Hello!? This is June. Not fall at all. But could you resist these plates if they were softly singing your name from across the thrift store in an “oh so sweet” voice with a $.99 tag on their bottoms? They came home with me.
Too easy right? Plus, I already had the plate hangers at home ready to go. It was like instant decorating. Now, you may think that is the end of my decorating distraction. Hardly. I also happened upon two incredible finds at the thrift store. Trust me, you are not going to believe these were in the thrift store. They were.
WHY would anyone donate these to the thrift store? Beats me. I was the lucky recipient because they had custom made white slipcovers on them and there were a few stains on the slipcovers. I guess no one bothered to look underneath. I lifted up one side fully expecting to find some harvest gold or avocado green velvet underneath. As soon as I saw the beige linen and nail head trim, I sat down on them to guard them.
As soon as I lifted the slipcover it was like I released some sort of beacon. It was a Saturday afternoon and the thrift store was packed. The ladies started to crowd and lurk around me as I sat in one of the chair holding the tags. It sort of reminded me of one of those zombie shows where they are all slowly moving toward you…and you just can’t run away because you LOVE these chairs and have to figure out where you can put them in your house. I felt totally under pressure and quickly made my way to the register. Everyone went back to shopping and I went home with the big prize of the day. It was too easy.
Once I had the plates up on the wall and the chairs in place, I decided I needed to do something over my dresser. I pulled out some old pictures and a mirror and set off to hang them up. All of this literally happened over the course of a day. My husband came home from work to a new room.
The botanical prints are vintage from an old book. I thought I wanted to change these to coastal birds and took one out. Now I have to find it or the book to replace it. It’s always something. The mirror was over my husband’s dresser in our old house. I will confess I had a smaller flat screen TV sitting on my dresser for nearly a year waiting to be put on the wall. My husband never put it up because he wanted to upgrade it to a larger size. Now, it looks so pretty I doubt we will ever put a TV up.
I shopped my house for some accessories to put on top of my dresser. I had emptied these balls into this urn for a place to store them in the cupboard. All of sudden I loved them and knew I had a place for them. The bamboo was a thrift store find from a while back. I have never seen another one like it. I just adore it and could use it in almost any room in the house.
Sometimes decorating is too easy. Other times, it feels like an endless search for something inspiring. I love when it happens this easy. I pulled the little table in from another room and swapped out the tea pot lamp in the living room to create a sweet little area between the two chairs.
The little music box was mine as a little girl. When you move, sometimes you unpack boxes and find things you had totally forgotten about. I love this sweet little bird music box and it holds so many memories for me. Now it has a special place.
There is so much to still do in this room. New paint, new flooring, window treatments, new bedding, a rug, something for the end of the bed, and art work above the night stands. I will have some projects for the fall…unless I run across some other great treasures again.
Have you ever had something just appear that was perfect? I would love to hear about that thrift store or yard sale score that was just too easy. Leave a comment. I read them all.
