Life has a funny way of coming full circle doesn’t it? We venture out into the world as young adults determined to live differently that those who went before us.
We are going to make a new mark, forge a new path, embrace the new and shed the old.
We meet a man, get engaged, and register for wedding gifts. We pat ourselves on the back because everything is going so swimmingly. We scour the stores to find the perfect wedding gifts. Not the usual wedding gifts. Gifts that are spectacular, new age, the current trend.
We pick out expensive flowered dishes and silverware with crazy swirls on them and stand back with the full confidence of a 24 year old. I’ll love these forever!
Foolish girl. Little does she know, she will live with the awful silverware and dishes she picked out that would be so “different” for years and years to come. Then she’ll be paralyzed by the thought of buying new ones because what if she makes another mistake? After clicking the purchase button 22 years later, she will stand back staring at the computer and utter out loud…I hope I’ll still like these next week.
All this drama is just a big fancy hook to get you interested in my quest for white dishes. Did it work? Are you hooked? If so, keep reading.
BTW: I picked one of the dinnerware sets below. Which one?

Porcelain Dishes
I think I have spent an insane amount of time looking for the “perfect” white dishes. I wanted white because I really love to mix and match dishes and wanted something simple enough that I could mix multiple colors and styles together but they have to live through a 5 year old, 15 year old, and a 40 ahem year old. The pros of porcelain dishes are that they are lightweight, thinner, a truer white, and still durable. They can be more expensive. I really loved the truer white portion of it and durable seemed like a good thing. Here are a few of my favorites.
Melange Dinnerware Nantucket Weave
Cellar Dinnerware “Paloma Embossed”
Stoneware
Stoneware and porcelain differ in quite a few ways. First, stoneware dishes are going to be heavier than porcelain dishes and also thicker = take up more space in your cupboard. Stoneware can come in a variety of colors and different shades. Stoneware is also hard and durable and good for using as everyday dishes. It can come in different finishes from glossy to matte. Stoneware is typically less expensive than porcelain. Here are a few of my favorites.
I bought the Thomson Maison White! Did you guess the right one? To me, the edge sort of looks like a scallop shell so they are just slightly coastal to me. I didn’t want dishes with shells all over them because they would be harder to mix in with other pieces so these will do the job nicely.
Which set is your favorite? The prices on these dishes are not bad at all. Please don’t be like me and wait years and years to replace your dishes. Mine were about the equivalent of about a week’s worth of groceries. Not bad considering I plan to store my investment in my cupboards rather than in the toilet. 🙂 Okay, I know, gross…but I couldn’t resist.
Have a fantastic day my friends!

I would love a set of these dishes. Any one of these sets is welcome in my home. If I could only pick one, I’d go with the Paloma Embossed because I’m such a texture girl. Plain texture that can be used with all kinds of other dishes and table settings. Love this post!

Love your choice, Nancy! Your new dishes are lovely!
I, too, have been looking for a set of white dishes but just haven’t found exactly what I like!
Have a great day!

I thought I was the only one who did that with my registry dishes! I have a great white dish set now that I’m more “grown-up;” I got it from walmart of all places! I think it’s the single highest-quality thing I’ve ever bought there. I love the ones you pick – and I bet I’d even still love them in a week. 😉
