Oh my goodness, I have missed y’all so much! I have so much to tell you about in the coming weeks. Stuff to tell you about Miss Georgia and Kitchen refresh beginnings and Vintage door love and We almost decided to build another house. But first, before I spill my guts…I have a little project to share with you. You see, when I have a million thoughts swirling around and I want to escape for a bit from making grown up decisions, I look for a piece of furniture to get lost in. The sound of a mouse sander really drowns out the noise if you know what I mean. I’m going to start you with the total glamour shot of the new little table in all its glory first, then I’ll tell you its storied tale. I literally walked into the game room and took hubby’s water glass right off this table as he was sitting next to it and carried it out to the back deck. He never even questioned it as he looked around for somewhere else to set his glass. What a great guy. I’m sure he knew this little table had a target on it as it sat in the house looking like this. Gross huh? I knew a good sanding was in order to not only free this sweet little table from its not so pretty coat, but I knew it would free me of the stress I had been carrying for the last few weeks. Sanding is a great stress reliever. It’s almost up there with puppies…although there is no scientific evidence of this. After a lot of sanding she looked like this. All this beauty was just waiting underneath. When we are able to sand away the cracks, scuffs, gouges, nicks, and scrapes the beauty that was always there can show through. As her layers of grime and rough patches drifted away in the dust, I felt my layers peel away too. I added a layer of driftwood stain to really highlight the beautiful grain. I thought about leaving her as is, but the inside of the cabinet and the drawer front were a veneer that didn’t look very pretty with the stain. I turned to one of my favorite colors, Louis Blue from Annie Sloan to give it a little extra character. Not really being able to leave well enough alone, I then turned to my other BFF white wax. This is the point in a furniture makeover where that Diana Ross song should go off in my head, “Stop! In The Name Of Love …before you break my heart”. I love her like this but in all honesty, her weathered wood finish was really pretty and I probably kinda screwed this one up a little bit. Shhh…don’t tell anyone. I’m trying really hard to not be the woman with way too many accessories on with matching shoes and bag; matching nails and lipstick. Things start a chain reaction around here and now I have my eye on a another piece of furniture. See this French armoire peaking in the left frame of this picture? Someone stop me, because I can’t stop thinking about how amazing white wax would look on it. Maybe I need an intervention. “Nancy, put down the wax brush (as bff walks toward me slowly) and the white wax. I know white wax makes you feel good, but your obsession with it is not healthy. After you go through a little white wax detox you’ll see things in perspective again”. Right. The good news is, my parents have the exact same armoire sitting in their garage going totally unused right now. Hmmmmm…safety in numbers? I’ll be back Thursday with another agonizing decision you’ll want to tune in for. White porcelain dishes or white earthenware? What’s the difference? Ahhhh! I might need more sanding therapy. 🙂

AND this is why I’m following you…what are you doing in my head ha!! I can’t begin to tell you how many people are amazed that I sand and paint things, its good to know you get me!!
Nancy says
Oh Valarie…I totally get you! The other day I almost bought a French China Cabinet at the thrift store because I could “see” it painted etc… It would’ve come home with me if my garage wasn’t already piled full of “projects”. The sanding, painting, distressing is so therapeutic.

LOL… I totally get that your sweet husband is just taking it all in stride. He’s a keeper, for sure. And LOVE that driftwood stain. I never seem to be patient enough to sand down to the good wood so that I can use a stain. You’ve surely inspired me to think about giving it a try. Congrats on a great makeover.

He is a keeper for sure! He has to take things in stride to be married to me. LOL I’m becoming obsessed with sanding things down now.
