My Christmas Home: Tablescape

I’m so thrilled to be back with another space in my Christmas home.  I had so much fun with this tablescape and hope you like it too.

The other day, in my English class, we gave the students the writing prompt, “What was your favorite item on the Thanksgiving table?”

They each wrote a paragraph on this topic to illustrate the point that a paragraph should be about one topic and one topic only.  Some students said…

Mine?  Elbows

Yep, that’s right, elbows.  Now, before you write a comment telling me elbows should never be on a table, let me share why it’s my favorite thing.

Holiday meals are such a lovely time of family.  But let’s be honest.  They aren’t easy.  There’s a lot of work that goes into setting the perfect table with the perfect centerpiece.  Then there is the planning of the meal and finding all the recipes to make the meal.

Now trek to the grocery store to buy copious amounts of ingredients and spend hours slaving away in the kitchen creating a meal your family will rave about.

The family gathers around the table and revels in the meal you just created for them.  You can tell they love it, because they are finished eating it in 10 minutes flat.  But then, my favorite part of the meal happens…the moments after the meal while we linger at the table, propping our elbows on it enjoying a cup of coffee or tea.

The casual moments after the meal where everyone relaxes and visits and talks about all the things we never have time to really talk about.  They share stories and memories…all while breaking the social etiquette rule of putting their elbows on the table.  It really is my favorite part.  When I can look at the faces of the people I love most in the world and enjoy their presence around a table when we have nowhere to go and nothing really to do.

That’s why I make these tablescapes.  For the elbows on the table.

And for the little paws under it.  Did you spot her?  She blends in with my rug.  🙂

I created these sweet little wreathes for the backs of my chairs and love them so much.  It’s just the right amount of coastal for me.

I found the deer I used on the centerpiece at Target and gave them a little makeover.  They came with gray scarves wrapped around their necks.  I thought they needed a little pine-cone and double-faced satin instead.

I cut fresh greenery from the yard to create a natural table runner and tucked a faux greenery under each plate to add just a little something extra.

P.S.  Don’t you love those candelabras?  Well, I ordered a set of shorter candles to go in these candelabras and when they arrived they were waaaay to skinny to go in them.  Does anyone know what to do with 60 shorter white candles?  Be prepared for some white short candle decor coming your way,  🙂
