Today I’m going to give you a sneak peak into my design for a recent client. Although I don’t have a mid-century mod design aesthetic in my own home, I can truly appreciate the beautiful clean and simple lines of it. I had so much fun putting together three spaces for a recent client.
It was so much fun to visit with them about the treasures they already have in their home and what it is they want their home to feel like. I think I love working with people as much as I like designing.
If you knew me in person you would know I love to talk and laugh and have a good time. To me, a design project is a time when I get to talk to someone about what it is I love. What could be better?
These clients didn’t really have a budget, although they did tell me they were “more Target than Saks Fifth Avenue”. I totally get that. I am too.
They wanted a plan so they could continue to work on rooms with an end look in mind. Here’s what I came up with for their front door, family room, and dining room.
Front Door
They have a standard mid-century home that happens to have two front doors exactly the same, about 15 feet apart. People are always confused about which one is the real front door so we aimed at solving it through some simple strategies.
Dining Room
My clients have an incredible mid-century modern dining room table and credenza they found at the local thrift store. Mid-century modern isn’t highly sought after here like it is in other parts of the country so often incredible pieces will go for next to nothing. Their dining room has a large fireplace and built in bookshelves. Below you’ll find part of what I sent them to start them on their path to the dining room of their dreams.
Living Room
My jaw dropped when I walked in their living room because they have an incredible mid-century modern credenza with a beautiful wood finish. The best part of it? The front doors are upholstered in cowhide. Old cowhide. They told me it came with the house. When the previous owners sold them the house they told them they would come and haul the piece away to the thrift store. Uh…no! They kept it. They wanted storage for books and a plan to move forward in the room.
The first item on the list was a comfortable chair for the man of the house and then they wanted other pieces that could carry them into the future as their children left for college.
I had so much fun working on this project. This was a little sneak peak. As I finish projects I think you might be interested in, I will try to post them here and include all of the links so you can purchase items you might like. I’m really loving this new aspect of this little blog and am having so much fun putting rooms together for people.
Have a great day!

Love your ideas and appreciate you sharing your strategy. This little teaser makes me anxious to see the before so I know what you are referring to, i.e., “heavy dark tile” of the fireplace. I hope you will publish “before” and “after” pictures because it will be so much more interesting when we have them to compare. Great post.
