It’s here! It’s here! It’s here! I can hardly believe it is already week 6 and I am revealing my Tropical Palm Beach inspired media room. I knew months ago this was the room I wanted to reinvent for the ORC because my family would get so much use from it. I wanted a space that felt happy, inviting, kid friendly, and still fit with the vision I have for the rest of my home. I’m so pleased with the results. Actually, that’s an understatement. I have found myself walking into the room before bed, sitting down for a few seconds in the chairs, and whispering “good-night” to the room. Weird? No.
Here’s my new room obsession…
I’m not going to take up a lot of space writing a lot of copy for this post because I know you are really here for the pictures. I’ll share details about everything that went in this room in the days ahead. Just know that almost everything, and I mean everything, came from the thrift store. I’ll have a tutorial up next week on how I created the faux tray ceiling and remade the fabulous bamboo frames to fit my vision. But for now…enjoy the pics.
Okay, okay. I do have to tell you a few things. The most expensive fabric in this room was only $8.99 a yard. One of the only store bought items I bought for this room is the bamboo stools. They were worth the splurge, if Target counts as a splurge.
This room isn’t quite as skinny as this photo makes it look, but I wanted to give you the full view. It is narrow though, which is why we use it as a media room. It wouldn’t work well for a bedroom because it is only nine feet wide and thirteen feet long.
Picture overload right? I just had to give you the “whole picture”. Okay, bad jokes aside. Would you believe I put this room together in a very budget friendly way? A lot of items I re-purposed from other spaces, but there were many great thrift finds that seemed to fall right in my lap. You can see the list of items at the bottom of the post. What good would beautiful after shots be if I didn’t show you the before? Here’s a little side by side. I love good before and after pictures, don’t you?
Amazing right? I know. I can hardly believe we lived that way when I look back at the before photos. I’m so inspired to take on the rest of my house…right after a long nap. 🙂 As promised earlier, I am sharing some resources. As I stated though, many items came from the thrift store.
Sources:
Rug: Amazon (gift certificate)
Console: Henredon thrift store find ($60) painted with Pure and Original Paint in Barbados Blue
Accessories on Console: All thrift store finds (no more than $80 total [guessing])
Shutters behind television: Yard sale find (all four for $10)
Curtains: Waverly Fabric from JoAnn crafts ($8.99 a yard x 6 yards)
Chairs: I found mine at the thrift store with custom slipcovers but I’ve seen these same chairs in T.J. Maxx and Homegoods for $199 each. Mine were $60 each (it’s been a while).
Pillows: Sewn by me from Waverly for Wal-Mart fabric at $3.97 per yard.
Bamboo Art: Found at the thrift store, repainted and recreated with decoupage ($25 each)
Bird Art: Frames were bought several years ago at Hobby Lobby. Art prints from local art show (6 for $10)
Lamp: T.J. Maxx ($39.99) and Greek key trim from Hobby Lobby ($4.00 per yard with coupon)
Blue chest in between chairs: My son’s old nightstand painted with Waverly Chalk finish paint
Leaf bowl: Gifted to me by sweet friend and fellow blogger CoCo (also in the One Room Challenge).
Rope ball: T. J. Maxx ($6.99)
Secretary Desk and shelves: Found at a vintage store years ago
Brass Flamingos: Thrift store ($2.00 each)
Accessories in shelves: All from the thrift store or out of my stash.
Wood Ceiling: Tongue and groove planking wood from Lowe’s ($60.00) Trim ($40)
Curtain Rod: Better Homes and Gardens collection for Wal-Mart ($20.00)
Small foot stools: Target ($59.00 each)
I have to say I thought this room would be so much easier than the bathroom I did last fall, but I was wrong. No matter what you think, doing an entire room in essentially five weeks is tough. It really takes perseverance and decision making, two things I easily lose when Nashville Flip comes on. But all the blood, sweat, and tears was worth it in the end. If you saw something that inspired you, please feel free to share it on Facebook or Pin my graphic. It validates my efforts more than you know.
Please leave me a comment. I would love to know what you think of my little media room makeover. Have a lovely day and be sure to check out all the other rooms on the One Room Challenge Link Up Page. There are some amazing rooms!
Plus, yesterday the featured designers shared their spaces and I promise, you won’t be disappointed. They are gorgeous rooms. One Room Challenge Featured Designers

Love the cheery relaxed vibe of this room! The colours are fantastic and that wooden ceiling treatment is bananas! Well done.
Nancy says
OMG Jen! I love, love, love your blog. Thanks so much for checking out my room. I can’t wait to study your new space too! Can you believe the wooden ceiling was so affordable? I might become a woodaholic.

Khadija says
I love the way the ceiling plays off on the rug. Those footstools are amazing and the room is so comfy looking. I think the curtains should be high and wide across the wall though and maybe a silky green more like the color of your shutters. 🙂
Nancy says
Thanks Khadija! Those foot stools stopped me in my tracks. It’s hard to tell in the photos because the wall and ceiling are the same color but I only left about six inches between the ceiling and the curtain rod. I have my fingers crossed that someday I’ll be able to put crown in every room so I left myself a little play. I know about the green. I kept coming back to it and debating putting green fabric on those windows. It was a hard choice, but I’m trying to break out of my too matchy tendency and work with colors that are a little “off” from each other.
Thanks so much for your input. I really do love it and appreciate it.
Hugs,
Nancy
Jeanne says
Love the ceiling (how did you do that???!) and the pops of lime green throughout the room. It is very coastal and looks relaxing – a fun spot. Fabulous!
Nancy says
Thanks Jeanne! I’m going to have a tutorial for the ceiling coming up very soon so be sure to check back. I love the pops of lime green also. It is for sure a happy place to hang out. Have a great day!
Nancy
Debi says
WOW! It looks great – you definitely achieved the look. The ceiling may be my favorite but I also love all the different tones/shades of color.
Nancy says
Thanks Debi! I’m loving the extra pops of color in the space. I have to tell you, when I first painted the green shutters one day outside, I stood back and had a little minor panic moment because I haven’t used something so bright in my home (other than kid’s rooms). But I’m loving the happy quality of the space.
Thanks for stopping by!
Nancy
Robyn says
Wow! What a fabulous room! I love it and have been inspired! I am getting ready to redo a now-empty bedroom into a hobby/work room for Hubby and me. Will definitely use your style! Great job!!
Nancy says
Robyn, my best wishes for a bedroom transformation of your own. I would love a whole room dedicated to working on a hobby. How fun is this that going to be! I would love to see what you do. Feel free to e-mail me pictures. Thanks for reading!

Every detail is perfect. But that ceiling………… oh, all the heart eyes for that!
Nancy says
Thanks Amanda! I’m kinda in love with the ceiling too!
Nancy
Elise says
This is the prettiest “media” room I’ve ever seen. For some reason when I read “media room” I think dark and manly. This is far from that! HOORAY!!!! xx
Nancy says
Hahaha! Elise! I know, media rooms seem to be for men. I wanted this space to be a cheery and happy place. When the kids aren’t using it to play video games, I escape to it to watch my shows (hello Poldark) and HGTV. Living with a house full of boys, the main living room TV usually has some sort of car show or sport on it.
Thanks for checking it out!
Nancy
Vel says
Your media room reminds me of an HGTV dream home space I once saw, you did an awesome job on this one Nancy! I love that unlike other media room, yours is actually quite relaxing ! Congrats and CHEERS to us for another space done!

Laura Ingalls Gunn says
Nancy take a bow. This is a wonderful transformation! It just shows what a good eye you have. My favorite elements are the console and brass flamingos. Have a wonderful week!
Kathy says

Wow! Thanks for sharing your before and after room with Talk of the Town. You did an amazing job and I just love the fact that it was mostly done with thrift store finds. The only way to go!!!
