Well, I’ve finally come down off Procrastination Mountain. I feel like climbing up Procrastination took more out of me than actually coming down. Just like gravity makes your speed accelerate downhill…so it was when I started on the kitchen makeover.
I’m not to the finish line though. I’m just at a little pit-stop and thought I would catch you up on what I am doing. If you remember, this is where I started.
Was it awful? No. Just kind of vanilla. Instead, I’ve decided to go all Cookies in Cream with the real Oreos. You’ll remember how I made this hollow core door into my own version of a vintage door for super cheap. I think it makes the room.
You can see that I wrapped the shiplap from the dining room around the corner and into the kitchen. I love the wrapped look. I have a little touch up painting to do in the corner but I needed hubby’s super tall ladder which was in his van.
Who knew white paint with a little black thrown in the mix could be so refreshing? Painting the cabinets was the thing that kept me on Procrastination Mountain for so long.
Everyone knows having a beautiful kitchen is the most important thing in the world right?
I mean seriously people, it’s so much more important than riding bike with your kids, paying bills, and volunteering for your child’s band booth at the town festival.
You know I am kidding. 🙂 Now you can see why it took me so long to come down off the mountain. I felt like painting the cabinets would be such a chore that my whole family would suffer and my boys would grow up to have commitment issues because their mom was banished to the garage for what seemed like eons painting kitchen cabinet doors and drawers.
But you know what? It really wasn’t bad. I’ll have a full tutorial on how I painted the whole kitchen in 3 days while still having time to go outside and play in the rain until we were all soaking wet. I’ll post a tutorial about how easy it was to paint my cabinets with Fusion Mineral Paint in the next few days.
You can see the hardware isn’t on yet. I’m so excited to show you the hardware which should be traveling in the mail right now. I went with a flat black which just seems sooo chic to me.
I bought the 12″ drawer pulls for the large drawers and 6″ drawer pulls for the smaller drawers. I bought the matching pulls for all the doors. I think they are going to be stunning on the white cabinets.
I added shiplap to the sides of the island and then painted it black. Judging from this photo, I think it needs at least one more coat. Right now I left the drywall painted in the tan color. I think I’m going to paint it all black so the whole island feels grounded.
The counter stools are on their way out. I am trying to decide between these two counter stools from Target. Remember, they will be up against black. Which do you like better?
I’m kinda leaning toward the antique wood but light and bright is nice too. Hmmmmm….
Next on my list is the backsplash. I have something fun planned for that and am going to totally keep you in suspense on it though. If you follow me on Instagram you may see it showing up on my Instastory though.
It feels so good taking off those clunky mountain hiking boots and putting on my comfy Skechers so I can get this done! I seriously think athletic-wear companies should stop making commercials with woman doing yoga on mountain tops and show DIY yoga…
Doing downward dog while putting Frog Tape on your tile so paint doesn’t get on it.
Doing vajrasana as you paint the side of your island avoiding getting paint your granite.
Throw in a Lord of The Dance pose just because who wouldn’t want to do a pose called Lord of The Dance?
Ending with shavasana as you collapse in exhaustion.
I’m so happy I came down off that mountain…it paid off big time. Now I’m going to go admire my “new” old kitchen.

Looking GOOD!!! When do you have time to sleep ? You are one busy lady, you must be a Capricorn.I personally like the wood stools verse the white ones.Have a good day and come off that mountain one step at a time!!!?

Thanks Pat! It’s amazing what I can get done on summer vacation when I don’t have to go to a job during the day. It has also helped that it has rained for several days here in sunny Florida. I’m actually a Leo. I’ve kept my normal sleep schedule which means I’m up at 5:30 and have some good solid time before the kids get up.
I’m leaning toward the wood ones too.

You’ve come a long way, baby! That kitchen is really showing signs of the your great eye for design and DIY! Love seeing the update and can’t wait to see the reveal. As for the bar stools, I think I like the wood tone. Keep at it girl, you’re almost at the finish line!! XOXO Susie from The Chelsea Project

Thank you so much Susie! I can see the finish in sight.

Good for you! I like the wood stool, too. What do you think about white wax on them? I would like to know your thoughts on the travertine floor tile? I had the same tile put in my last house and loved it, but we moved before having it very long.
Nancy says
Good question about the tile. Mine isn’t actually travertine but a “look alike”. I kinda wish I would have paid the extra money to have hardwoods/laminate put in instead of the tile but there were some other things I really, really wanted instead. I feel like it is neutral enough but I’m just not a fan of grout lines. They bother me terribly…but apparently not enough to get down on my hands and knees and do major scrub of the grout lines. 🙂

I vote for the wood tone stool as well. If you don’t like it you can always paint in white latter. Your kitchen is looking awesome!
Nancy says
Thanks Marilyn! I think I am going to go with the wood stools too!

Nancy, I’m so glad you came down off the mountain! Honestly, your kitchen is just so beautiful! I love everything you have done! I’m a shiplap gal, too! You are such a busy gal and I am just amazed at all you get done in your lovely home! Your home is so beautiful and you can just see all the love you have put into it. You have been blessed with so many gifts! Whatever you do always turns out so lovely!
Have you looked at Kirkland’s online for stools? I just got mine and I love them! They are white with a round wooden top — so cute, so country and not too expensive! The item number is: SKU #141499. I am a real Kirkland’s shopper as their items are so unique.
Looking forward to seeing your kitchen cupboards with all that lovely hardware! Love what you have ordered!
Make sure you take some time out to enjoy summer! Blessings, Nancy! Have a great day!

Mary-Ann,
I will for sure have to check out Kirkland’s. I love so many of their items when I go in the stores. It has been a busy summer for sure but I am driven to get some of these projects done before we go on vacation. I’m looking forward to some cool upper Michigan weather.

Rebecca M says
I like a stool with a back on it for comfort.
Nancy says
Thanks Rebecca. I do too but we use so much of this island for food prep that I’m always moving the current ones out of the way. I’m hoping stools without a back will tuck nicely under and they won’t be in the way. That’s the problem with having too little counter space in a kitchen. The story of my life. In four houses I’ve never had a nice long run of counter space…ever.
I guess in the scheme of life it isn’t that big of a deal. *sigh*
Have a great weekend!

It is looking great! I like the wood ones also. I like them to tie back to the pantry door.
Nancy says
I agree Debi! I’m pretty sure wood tone is going to be the way to go.
