I wanted to take a few minutes and wish you a happy 4th of July! My hope is that you will have time to spend with family, eat some good food, watch some great fireworks, and enjoy the freedom so many have fought and died for.
In this election year, where this is so much news coverage of what each candidate said and didn’t say and in-depth analysis of every single syllable that comes out of their mouths, I wanted to bring it back to July 4th, 1776 and what that day meant. I’m sprinkling in a few photos of our 4th of July vacation from last year.
The Declaration of Independence, signed by 56 delegates was audacious. It was bold. It was a declaration to tell the world we were gaining our independence…and to recognized us as a sovereign state. It was meant to persuade the world (and it’s own people) we shouldn’t/couldn’t be ruled by a merciless leader any longer.
Our founding fathers were on the precipice. They knew it was a turning point. Make no mistake, when they wrote, “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” they meant it. They were, in essence, committing treason against Great Britain. They signed their names to it. In a world where we now choose to remain anonymous, it amazes me they had so much conviction they were willing to die for their belief.
This group of men, our founding fathers, declared a nation into existence. You see, there are four characteristics of a country/state, (1) territory (check), (2) people (check), (3) government (check), and (4) sovereignty (declared today over 200 years ago). Sovereignty is no joking matter…it is essential.
So, on this Independence Day, let’s all thank our lucky stars (all 50 of them) that those 56 delegates had the courage to make such a bold declaration. Let’s thank all the courageous military families that have served boldly with the belief this country is something to fight for.
But, most of all, let’s commit now to be bold in our convictions, patriotism, and allegiance so this wonderful land can remain by the people, for the people. May every heart beat true ‘neath the red, white, and blue.
