I finished the second big painting project! I absolutely adore how it turned out. I painted it with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Boxwood and then white waxed it with her white wax I bought from the nice ladies at Cottle and Gunn.
If you remember, this piece started out as two separate pieces that I “matched” together. It started out looking mix and match as two different colors.
I really wanted to display plates in the hutch but it was missing plate molding. I went to my local hardware store and bought 1/4″ round to glue on. I glued it with Elmer’s Wood glue. If you do this, make sure you try out how much room your plates need to have a stable position to sit in. I glued mine a full 2 inches from the back so the plates wouldn’t sit straight up.
Once they were glued in and they were tight, I started painting with MMSMP in Boxwood. It took several coats (4) because I started out with two different pieces, one painted, one not, and they were different types of wood. I wanted to make them appear to go together as much as possible. Here you can see the multiple layers of paint and the difference with adding more coats.
I hadn’t worked with white wax before, so it was a leap of faith when I brushed it on. I held my breath and then squealed at the gorgeous effect it had as I wiped it away. Here you can see the before, in process, and after of the white wax effect.
It looks like a heavy application, but because of the deep carving I wanted to get all that good wax in each crevice. The wax will lighten your piece quite a bit, so if a dark color is the goal, the white wax may not be the best choice. I love the pickled look it gives the piece. I let it cure for 24 hours and then went back and put on a coat of clear wax because I like the sheen it gives.
I also wanted to dress up the pulls, so I rubbed gilders paste on them. I love how it highlights the details on the handles, while the wax highlights all of the deep carving on the furniture piece. It’s a nice opposite effect. I really adore how the screws have their rustic look rather than some fancy way to attach them.
I ended up making the bottom shelf into a coffee bar. I chose to leave it stained. I gave it a quick and light sanding and then used Miss Mustard Seed’s Hemp Oil on the top to give it a rich color and some protection from the moisture. I love how the coffee bar frees up my counter and makes the hutch even more functional. I store all of my table linens in the drawers which makes setting the table an ease.
I can’t wait to use the white wax again! I think it will be on a stained french chair. I bet it will look great!
Have a great weekend!

Thanks Paula for stopping by. I love how it turned out also. Every time I walk in my kitchen now it makes me happy.
I looooove it! I’ve only used white wax once or twice and I loved how it turned out.
Thanks Maureen! I was nervous about the white wax, but now I find myself looking at every piece of furniture wondering what white wax would do to it. Must. control. myself.
Thanks for looking!

I used Miss Mustard Seed’s White Wax. It was easy to use. It has almost a whipped frosting feel. No need to clear wax before. Just paint and then put white wax on.
I love your piece and I love the white wax effect. I bought some but haven’t tried it yet… thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks Susan. I can’t wait to see what you do with it. Thanks!
