*Sigh* You know any post beginning with a sigh has to be good. No exception here. The star of this movie is a little French Country wooden valance who started life as an ugly duckling…and turned into….
This story, like all good stories, is filled with betrayal, the kindness of a stranger, redemption, and a happily ever after. Our movie star had humble beginnings. In fact, for the most part, she was in pieces hanging around Home Depot just waiting to be discovered. Surely, someone could spot her potential and let her dream come to life. Well, that someone was me. She was crafted and worked on until she came to this point.
This is where the real drama in our story begins. She was just a little too plain. She needed star quality. This is where our kind stranger comes into the story. Imagine how thrilled I was when Derrick Lawless from D. Lawless Hardware offered to send her some special wood appliques to take her from being ordinary to extraordinary. Literally, within hours she went from ho hum to woo hoo!
I was so excited and it was so easy to do! Next week I’ll be back with a full tutorial on how easy it was to build her and add this special touch. But like all good stories going along perfectly, there must be a setback. Her manager (me) wanted her to be more colorful and stand out among the crowd. She was painted a dark shade of blue and given layers and layers of white wash and white wax in a sorry attempt to turn her into something she just didn’t want to be.
It’s not that it was totally bad. It just wasn’t totally good either. Like all stars who go through a rough period, she came out the other side with a full awareness of who she really is. She spilled all the beans in her Barbara Walters interview, even crying about the rough days she spent trying to be something she wasn’t. This is the fun part…the redemption. Here she is, comfortable in her own skin…or wood appliques.
I know, right? Didn’t she really come into her own? I think it makes the whole room. I love a good French Country wooden valance.
I found some really cute pillows at Wal-Mart of all places and I feel like they just totally make it all come together. Wal-Mart…who would think?
I want to send out a serious thank you to Derrick Lawless from D. Lawless for sending me these gorgeous appliques allowing me to make my French Country wooden valance dreams come true. What a gift! I’ll be back next week with a full tutorial on how you can build your own French Country wooden valance, but in the meantime I’ll answer a few questions you may have.
- The valances were built using 1/4 birch plywood and inexpensive trim.
- The final version of the valances were painted with Waverly Inspirations Chalk Acrylic Paint in Mineral and then brushed with white.
- The stunning wood appliques are:
- Large Splash With Bundled Center (used in the middle of two outside valances)
- Decorative Plume (used in the center of the large middle valance)
- Pair of Staff Scrolls (used on the middle valance)
- Birch Wood Plume Corner Piece (one in each corner of the valances)
Don’t you just love a happily ever after? This was just one more step toward my dream bedroom. In case you missed it, the jumping off point for this bedroom makeover was the blue and white plate wall I put together from the thrift store.
I have more projects in store for this room. Watch it transform over the next month from an okay master bedroom to an extraordinary one.
Have a Fantastic Day!

Are the valences green or grey, depending on which picture I look at. Whichever, they are lovely.

Beautiful! I should do a post on our wooden valances that my hubby made for me. We have a lot of Asian decor and so he trimmed them with bamboo molding! I LOVE them! You did a fabulous job on these! So pretty!
Nancy says
Thanks Pinky! The valances were a fun project and I think they add so much to the room. Hiding behind them are black-out shades. A girl’s gotta sleep. 🙂
