Do you ever have those moments when you are driving down the road and suddenly an answer to something you have been mulling over in your mind just hits you like a giant Florida bug hitting your windshield? I think people call it an epiphany. I recently had one of those and it was all about this frame.
I saw this frame in my local thrift store and immediately loved it but I didn’t have anything to go in it and really didn’t think I had anywhere to hang it. I walked away and left it there. A few days later I was driving home from work and the epiphany just happened…French Country Chalk Painted Art Display!
I knew it would find a place right next to our breakfast nook and I would have so much fun changing it out for the seasons. I used a small brad to hang this clip to display this sweet print I had in my stash but it could easily be the backdrop for a wreath, a series of clips and art, and maybe a great Christmas card display. A fun French Country take on art display.
I bought the clips at Wal Mart and used black chalky finish paint on them. I bought and painted four of them so I have the possibility of doing a little art display gallery in the future. I used a small brad to hang it up so it really doesn’t even leave a mark in the wood.
My birthday was last Saturday and I was headed to the bakery to pick up some cupcakes for a little after dinner celebration when I noticed the small warehouse across the street from the bakery had a sign on their door and a nice older gentleman was leaving with arms full of vintage home decor goodies. Um…I never made it to the bakery but I did pick up these gorgeous candlesticks and a few other things. Way less calories but decidedly more expensive.
They were so worth it and I actually bought three. All of the carving on them just makes my heart sing. Give me a fancy looking piece of furniture or accessory and it will turn my head every time.
The sweet little flowers on this frame captured my imagination. The solid gold wasn’t doing them justice and I knew with a little help from some paint they could really be special. I created this layered look by layering coats of paint and then rubbing the paint back with a damp cloth. Easy on the eyes, not on the fingers. The gold you see is actually the gold of the frame coming through after rubbing off the paint. This technique won’t work with regular latex paint. I used several different brands of chalky finish paint I had in my stash.
I love the layered look and don’t think I can go back to just painting a solid color and walking away. This has so much more depth and interest. The pictures really don’t even capture it all the way. For the back of the frame I used some tongue and groove boards you can find in a package at the home improvement store. I stained them grey, cut them to size and nailed them onto the back. So simple.
So the next time you are in the thrift store and love something…my recommendation is to buy it. Then when you have your epiphany you can send me an e-mail and show me what magical creation you came up with.
I hope you have a fantastic day and an incredible weekend!

Love this! It looks great. I just finished a similar project with an old mirror and I agree with you- the layered look adds so much depth and character!
Just found your blog through another site and will definitely be coming back to read past posts. We’ve got a lot in common being Florida girls, high school teachers and design lovers:) Good luck with the new school year!

Thanks so much Katey! Yes we Florida girls have to stick together. I think working with painted furniture is such a learning process. I want to go back and repaint some of my early creations now. 🙂
Have a good one!

I have 2 old, very large frames, that belonged to my great-grandmother, just sitting in the attic waiting to be put to good use. Thanks so much for the idea!
Nancy says
Hey Karen!
That would be such a fun project. This only took a few hours spread over two evenings. One evening to work on paint and stain and then the next night to assemble. You can do it!
