Five Simple Ways To Add Patriotic Decor To Your Home

In this post:  I’m sharing five simple ways to add patriotic decor to your home that are both easy and inexpensive.  See how I made my house festive for less than $50.

Whenever I see the flags and bunting go up for the 4th of July I can’t help but think of my littles running around in bare feet waving sparklers laughing, playing and falling down in the grass.  So, as the 4th of July is quickly approaching I thought I would set the mood at home to start celebrating the birth of our country and I’m going to share the five simple ways I added patriotic decor right here at home (on the cheap ya’ll ‘cuz that’s how I roll).

One

Set the standard for the street.  Yes, that’s right…one flag for us just wouldn’t be enough…that’s what EVERYONE does.  Since Memorial Day we have been flying not one, but two flags on the front of our house.  I have some patriotic boys here at home that felt one is just not enough.  I let hubby and the boys decide on landscaping and flags etc…I only worry about the patio and front door.

You can buy flags at any home improvement store and they are actually pretty easy to put up.  Make sure you read up about the flag flying guidelines so you display it properly, you don’t want to be the talk of the neighborhood for the wrong reasons.

Two

Create a centerpiece to add a little patriotism to the breakfast nook.  This was so easy.  As easy as putting three flags in a mason jar and placing them on top of a stack of books.  It was like 10 second decorating.  I bought these small flags in the Target dollar spot for $1.  Three flags for a dollar to make a centerpiece?  SOLD!

I picked up this wicker tray on clearance at Target while I was there and don’t know how I decorated without it before.  Seriously, it adds so much texture you can hardly go wrong just plopping stuff down in it.  If you don’t have a basket tray yet…run to the store and buy one because it is a game-changer.

What really makes this work is that I have three groups in it.  (1)The flags and books combined, (2) The fake plant (you could use real) (3) The jute thingy.  By putting things in a group of three it makes it just feel right (just like 3 flags).  Adding some greenery always gives it that final touch also.  Seriously, whenever I feel like there is something missing I put some greenery in it and BAM, suddenly it feels complete.

Three

Add a little bunting.  I think I am addicted to bunting.  Like the little girl exclaims in Despicable Me “It’s Just So Fluffly!”  I find myself exclaiming, “It’s Just So Cute!”  It’s hard to believe $3 (Target) can take a window from being ordinary to extraordinary.

Right?  Really you can hardly make this for $3 (unless you already own all the supplies).  Plus, this is fabric so it can be used again next year.

Four

You know how I love to create vignettes on the top of this Secretary desk.  I picked up these black candlesticks at the thrift the other day for just a few bucks.  Hello!?  Why would someone get rid of these?

I added some tea light holders (that are so festive at night) and some flags and a sweet rope paper sign to create a festive vignette.

The tea light holders and flags are again from Target.  I made the rope paper sign and…I have a tutorial for you at the bottom of this post to show you how you can make your own (and a free printable if you don’t think you can hand letter).  Your welcome.  🙂  Happy 4th of July.

Can you believe I added all this festiveness to this space for the grand total of $8?  Me either!

Truthful Disclosure:  I went back to the Target dollar spot three times in the making of this post and had to spring for Icee’s for the boys every.single.time.  I spent more on Icee’s than I did on decor.

Don’t forget the door.  Putting something festive on your front door is such an easy way to tell the neighborhood you have your act together (even if the inside of your house is a mess).  Hey!  What they don’t know won’t hurt them.

I personally love the flexibility of a hanging container like a basket or some of the metal containers out there.  It is so easy to buy some seasonal faux flowers and place them in there.  It can be changed out quickly and doesn’t take a master-crafter to make it look good.

If your container is too deep for your flowers, simply stuff some crumpled up newspaper in the bottom to take up some of the space.  When the season is over, I wash  my faux flowers so they are nice and clean and put them in a big plastic tub.  Once you have enough faux flowers you can make multiple combinations for any season by putting different things together.  If you have a few containers you can really change the look in a jiffy.

Tutorial

Supplies: Scissors, 3 sheets of scrapbook paper (if using printable), double-sided tape, twine

1.  Print printable below on one sheet of letter size paper.  If using brown craft paper like I did, cut a long skinny piece and hand letter your saying on it.
2. Cut 2nd piece of paper in half horizontally.
3. Roll each of the cut pieces to resemble the top and bottom of the scroll leaving a small tail of paper.
4. Glue the rolled pieces together using double sided tape of scrapbooking tape.
5. Attach scrolls to the back of your printable using tape to make it look like one long sheet of paper.
6. Feed twine through top scroll and tie in a knot to hang.
