First off, let me just say we are all A-okay and the house came through Hurricane Matthew unscathed. We evacuated (mom, dad, the boys, and myself) to Augusta, Georgia where we actually had a pretty good time shopping, going out to eat, and touring some of the local sights. People in the hotel were super friendly as I guess we were all “hurricane refugees” and bonded over coffee in the lobby each morning watching the news. Hubby stayed behind bunking with friends of ours who are inland. I can assure you…I will hear forever how he faced a hurricane head on without fear. Yadda, yadda, yadda. But he WAS brave (pssst…don’t tell him I said that).
I’m not normal. Okay, okay, I’m glad we got that out of the way. Keep that little tidbit of information as I move forward in this post.
A normal person, upon returning home, would survey their property, unpack the suitcases, and run to the store for milk, bread, eggs, etc…. Me? I saw this huge pile of branches and immediately thought of a great Halloween project.
No lie, the suitcases sat in the living room fully packed while I was out in the yard spraying branches black. If the neighbors didn’t think I was weird before…they do now.
Everyone on the street was cleaning up their yard and hauling tree limbs to the street. I’m walking up and down the street looking for the best dead branches and then standing there with a can of black spray paint.
To my defense, I did run to the grocery store while they were drying so my children could eat. I whipped together this little display and I love it so much! The crows are from Target and Dollar Tree, both items I had in my stash. I also had the rats from years past (Dollar Tree). It’s the first of the Halloween decor to go up. Expect more this week. Thanks for all of your comments, e-mails, and kind thoughts and prayers for my family here and on IG.
P.S. Did you know that a group of crows is called a murder of crows? Creepy right?
P.P.S. If you look real hard in the photos you can see some of my paint samples on the wall. This means the master bedroom is almost done and I’m ready to move on!
You guys are the best!

We survived unscathed too. (Saint Johns). We didn’t have to evacuate. My husband lowered the level of the pool 7 times! Glad you had a fun little side trip. I love the project that immediately came to mind when you got home. Lemons to lemonade for sure!

Seven times? Oh my goodness! I’m happy you didn’t have any major damage either. I think St. Augustine did the worst in our area. Have an awesome day Nancy!

Now that is a dedication to decorating…love it and the creepy display! Glad the house survived the storm. 🙂

Thanks so much Jeanne! I think it was mostly a result of being away from home when I really wanted to be there doing Halloween decorating. Thanks for visiting.

Well I can relate! I came home from my Sunday walk with a branch covered in Spanish moss. It is the perfect spooky Halloween accessory to display scary blackbirds. My husband just shook his head. Glad your family was out of harm’s way during the storm.

My sister and sons from Atlantic Beach fled to Tallahassee. Came home to no trouble. Thank our Lord. No fingernails left on my end worrying about all you who were affected. I love this post. It made me smile. Will be looking for branches and I have black spray paint. Dollar Tree here I come I hope you still have mice and birds.

Thanks Jody! I’m so happy it worked out for your sister and sons. We really dodged it on this one. Happy Halloween!
