I have a confession. The type of confession a design and DIY blogger shouldn’t admit…but it’s the truth. I stink at making wreaths. It’s true. Some people can grab a few items and some ribbon and *poof* they have an awesome wreath. This wreath project is more my style. A totally easy spring tulip wreath that anyone can make. I mean anyone.
This all started one day when I was in the local thrift and I spied an empty frame across the store. It was calling to me. As I started to make my way across the store I might have mumbled, “why wouldn’t someone have bought this frame? Seriously?”.
Well, I should have kept my mouth closed because as I was nearing the frame a lovely elderly woman started to push her cart in its direction. I could tell she spotted it too.
I thought, “Push down a lovely elderly woman just so I can get my frame? I have plans for that frame!”. No. I may be a lot of things, but rude is not one of them and elderly people happen to be some of my fav people. After all, I do live in the elderly person capital of the world. 🙂
When I was about five feet away she reached toward the frame and then moved her hand upward and picked up a pretty vase with flowers painted on it. Whew. I swooped in and slowly reached for the frame. She didn’t even notice! She wasn’t even looking at the frame! I commented how lovely the vase was and she agreed. I may have skipped a little toward the cashier with the beginnings of an easy spring tulip wreath.
For those of you who are not great wreath designers, I made a little tutorial so you can have your own easy spring tulip wreath.
Step 1: Find a frame and paint it. I used Annie Sloan chalk paint in Duck Egg for the first coat, then dry brushed with white to pull out all of the details.
As you can see, I didn’t worry about getting in all the little nooks and crannies of the frame. I liked the dark finish and the gold peeking through.
I love dry brushing (where you wipe most of the paint off your brush before painting). It highlights all the beautiful detail on carved items like this frame.
Step 2: Gather your other supplies. Be prepared, there’s a lot that goes in to this. Total sarcasm there. You will need: zip ties, tulips and a few other flowers, wire cutter, ribbon, a stapler. That’s it.
Step 3: Cut the tulip stems off of three tulip bunches. These are so easy to come by right now with all the spring items. Even Wal-Mart has them. Lay them out in the way you would want them to be on your frame. Ahem, sorry for the change of scenes but a 4 year old really wanted to go outside and ride his scooter so I had to improvise.
As you can see, I added in a little extra greenery to give it a little more texture.
Step 5: This is the hardest part. Zip tie the tulips together so they can just be picked up without any pieces falling apart. You might have to use several zip ties to make it feel secure.
This was the hardest part for me because you have to know which way to feed the “zip” through to make it catch. Seriously, I had trouble with this. Three college degrees and I can’t make a zip tie work. My parents would be so proud.
Step 6: Now zip tie the tulip bunch to the frame. You might have to put two zip ties together to make one long zip tie. Then trim them all down.
Step 7: Make a bow using the easy stapler method. Attach the bow using some floral wire or a left over bread loaf twist tie. Hey! It works. This is soooo the way to make a perfect bow. Click here for the tutorial from On Sutton Place.
I added a little hydrangea I had left over from another project just to give it a little something extra.
Tadah! There you have it! A super easy spring tulip wreath for the front door. Even I could do it. This is one of those projects anyone can do…it won’t be an epic fail.
The people in your neighborhood are totally going to stop and stare in amazement at your new easy spring tulip wreath as their dog does its business on your lawn. 🙂
You are awesome! Have a fantastic day!
