I’m on spring break this week!
Spring break = daily crafts, extra cups of coffee, walks on the beach, and movies on the sofa
It also means, since I work in a different school district than we live, that I am taking my boys to school and picking them up. This is something I’m lucky enough to have my mother do the rest of the time.
I get to play “stay at home mom” for the week and usually I delight in it.
Until yesterday.
After packing lunch and snacks, making crescent rolls with honey AND pancakes, plus bacon, I loaded the kids in the car to drop them at school.
I felt so accomplished. I did all this and put on a cute outfit with hair and make-up done. I was going to win this day.
As I buckled Luke in his car seat he said, “Oh how I love my mama”. My heart melted and I thought, this day is going to be the most awesome first day of spring break ever…and it was (almost).
I dropped off my high schooler who actually gave me a nice good-bye before he slipped out of the door and walked confidently across the grassy area, and I walked Luke to his classroom giving him a sweet hug wishing him a great morning of Pre-school.
Then I went home and made this DIY Moss Planter. I was totally winning at this day! Here’s how I made them.
One important note about the supplies. You need the clay pots that DO NOT have a hole on the bottom. I found mine at Wal-Mart in the craft supply area for about $1 a piece.
This really couldn’t be easier for the average person to make.
Step 1:
Measure the moss for the DIY Moss Planter by laying the pot on it’s side and allowing for an extra 1-2 inches on the top and the bottom. If you really wanted to be precise you could make a curved shape by tracing a rolling pot on the back of the moss and cutting out a curved shape.
If you’re one of those people…go ahead.
I’m not precise. I don’t have time for that. Cut out a strip of moss long enough and wide enough to cover the pot.
Step 2
Spray the pot with spray adhesive and roll the pot on the backside of the moss. Use your scissors to trim excess moss. I also sprayed inside the pot down about an inch and the bottom of the pot so I could wrap moss down the top and onto the bottom.
Step 3
Enjoy! It’s really that easy. I had all the supplies for this on-hand except for the clay pots. This project came in at less that $2.50 for me.

I headed off to the Pre-school to pick up my sweetie and arrived about 10 minutes early. I parked my high mileage Toyota next to the BMWs and Acura SUVs. All the moms were gathered under the vestibule waiting for them to open the doors. I waited with them still feeling like I was winning.
Then I started looking around and noticed all the moms were 15-20 years younger than me. No surprise there. They were all wearing workout gear because they had all just gone to the gym. Because that’s what they do when they are kid free. Even though I know many had just finished a workout class, they didn’t even look like they worked out.
Young, thin, pretty moms who drive expensive cars.
They were having conversations about the latest posts on Facebook and chatting about their vacations.
A less confident woman would have felt intimidated, old, less-than. But not me. You see, I knew something these women didn’t…
How hard it is to get glued on moss off your hands. Sometimes winning is all a matter of perception.

Update: After using them on my Easter table I discovered filling them with water will make your moss become soggy. Make sure to insert a plastic cup into the planter and use that to hold your flowers. Enjoy!

Ha!….this made my day…my very first “laugh out loud” for today!….I do have one of those “SUV’s” but wish I could run the roads in it with pretty work out clothes. LOL, Shirley. I know what you mean about a Honda Odyssey. I had one and thought I’d have it forever……until someone young, thin, and beautiful….driving an expensive car……rear-ended me. I kid you not. Sometimes life isn’t fair. 🙁
Oh Shirley I’m so happy I made you laugh today. As I was writing this post I was reading it back to my brother-in-law who is visiting. He laughed so hard he said his head hurt. He went with me the next day to pick up Luke just to “check out the scene”. He’s single by the way.

I’m in a similar boat (oldest mom by YEARS, drive a vW not a JAG or TESLA, NOT wearing workout clothes anywhere in public anytime soon) but I’d take a day of making great moss pots to preening at the gym! Good for you! Winning (sticky hands and all)

Hi there, how does one buy moss? I live in Kenya and have never seen any. In Europe people go for a walk on the woods and pull some (not really allowed) , so it it the sort of thing available at garden nurseries? I really would like to have a go. Thank you for some inspiring ideas. Αρτέμης
Hi Artemis! Hmmm…I’m not sure how you would get moss in Kenya. I bought mine in a package in my local craft store. It comes as a sheet of moss you can cut with a scissors.
