Well…I did it again. Then again. Then again. You see, this month I signed up for the Fab Furniture Flippin’ contest again because I was intrigued by the challenge; take a piece of ho hum furniture and turn it into a metallic furniture masterpiece with Country Chic Paints metallic cream paint. Plus, the name of the contest drew me in, Bling Bling. Who wouldn’t want to be part of a contest called Bling Bling? I thought this would be a cinch. Not quite as easy as I thought, but in the end…
Not bad right? Believe me, it wasn’t an easy journey getting to this point. Note to self…don’t sign up for a furniture makeover contest when you don’t have a piece of furniture to paint. Kinda a no-brainer right? I thought for sure I would easily find a piece of furniture I wanted to paint at my local thrift and knew exactly the colors I wanted to use.
I received a pint of Icicle paint and a pint of Silver Bullet metallic cream along with some paint accessories as part of entering the contest. I thought for sure I was going to do a piece of furniture in the Silver Bullet and then a dry brush the Icicle color on a dresser. The problem was, I couldn’t find a small dresser…like anywhere. I went to all my thrift stores every day and every day went home with an empty mini-van (yep, I totally rock that mini-van). Finally, when it came down to the wire, I decided I needed to just buy something. That’s when this sweet little chair entered my life and whispered, “I could be something great”, so I bought it for $7.50 and contemplated.
After letting it sit untouched for a few days, I finally dove in and painted the whole piece with the Icicle color and used the Vaseline technique of rubbing a little Vaseline on spots I wanted the paint to resist to give me a chippy old paint look. Then I went back in with the Silver Bullet and brushed it on letting some of it go on the wood color. I recovered the seat with a buffalo check on the bias and stood back…and stared, walked away, and came back and stared some more.
Did I like it? Is it really me? Am I a chippy paint kind of gal? I don’t have anything else in my house that is “chippy”. Hmmmm. You would have thought I was solving some major world crisis with the thinking and staring and sighing I did around the house.
So I started again. I know…let’s all say perfectionist together. This time I found some black chalk paint I had hanging out in the garage and painted the whole thing black. Then I went back in with the Silver Bullet and highlighted some of the details that makes this little chair so charming.
I didn’t worry about painting it perfectly…who has time for that? I ended up brushing the Silver Bullet on and then rubbing it into the wood with my finger. I love how it went into the cracks of the oak. I wanted to highlight all the details of the chair. The more I worked with the chair the more I developed a deep appreciation for the design of it. They just don’t make chairs like this anymore.
I also added a little pop of color by trimming out the cushion with some ready made green piping. I think the little pop of color really makes the chair. Ready for some pics? Here they come.
And yes, in case you were wondering, we don’t keep umbrellas in our umbrella stand…we keep light sabers. You never know when a Sith is going to surprise attack. With two boys, we have lots of light saber battles around here and we live in sunny Florida. By the way, isn’t the blue and white umbrella holder just the cutest?
I want to thank Country Chic paint and their awesome line of paints for this challenge. You can achieve this same look by using their Licorice All In One paint along with the metallic cream in the color Silver Bullet. I also want to thank the gals over at the Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest (TM) for this fun, albeit stressful, challenge. If you are a blogger and would like to be a part of next months challenge, contact them over at fabfurnitureflippingcontest.com but I highly recommend owning an actual piece of furniture to paint.
I’m linking this project up at Thea’s blog, Sweet Tea Refinishing, and Carrie’s blog, Thirty Eighth Street. You can head over there to see what other contestants have done with their metallic cream finish paint.
Have a fantastic day friends!

Nancy, your chair turned out great!! I’ve also had projects where I had to revisit and paint another color because that first one just wasn’t doing the trick. All the details you added and highlighted look fantastic! I would like to invite you to link up to our party, Sweet Inspiration, happening now. Hope to see you there!
