I’m happy to spend hard earned money on some decor items, but on some things I’m just plain cheap. That’s why I couldn’t spend $100 on Christmas pillows. I made my own DIY felt pillows to fill my Christmas wish list.
Don’t get me wrong, I had some really cute pillows in my cart at T.J. Maxx…then I started adding up the cost and the fact that I don’t keep the pillow inserts because I use a pillow wardrobe. Suddenly, it didn’t seem like buying them, no matter how cute, was a very good idea. So I got crafty.
I had these beige pillow covers in my stash. I bought them on my last excursion to IKEA and always thought I would do some kind of iron on to them. Instead, I bought a few sheets of felt, some pom poms, and a black paint pen and created my own Christmas pillows for less than $5.
Because I used felt, I didn’t have to worry about unfinished edges. The leaves won’t fray. I simply cut out various sizes of leaf shapes and hot glued them on. Then I glued three pom poms on and sketched out a word with a pencil. I then went back and filled it in with the paint pen. Easy peasy. I didn’t even have to sew anything.
I had so much fun making them in no time flat I decided to make a few more for my other chairs. I didn’t have any more IKEA pillow covers on hand so I raided my fabric stash and stitched together a few envelope style pillow covers. No fancy zippers or cording. Just simple straight seams that took only a few minutes to put together.
This time I used some white felt to make some trees. I just went online and found a clip art image of a Christmas tree and just copied it giving myself free reign to add my own artistic slant to it.
On a trip to War-Mart we saw whole sheets of rhinestones for less than $3. Luke and I glued them on to the white felt Christmas trees just to give them a little extra bling. The rhinestones catch the light and just sparkle.
I love how these little pillows turned out and my pocketbook likes it too. Are they exquisite forever pillows to use year after year? No. But they are cute for the season and we enjoyed making them so much that it was worth it just for that alone. So go grab some felt and a glue gun and see what you can create. It reminded me of making stockings. 🙂
Have a great day my friends!
