When I started this six week journey to a new Coastal Cottage Bathroom as part of the One Room Challenge, I didn’t really, really set a budget for myself. I knew I wanted to keep costs down and felt I could make a big impact with a lot of effort and just a little money.
It all started with this wallpaper. Hello gorgeous. I love the look of all the planked walls but I didn’t really want to put 100 nail holes in my ceiling and I don’t think I could have created the interest that York Wall Coverings has put into this paper.
I knew I wanted to do some type of board and batten and create some architectural interest and compliment the ceiling. So off I went to Home Depot to buy 1×4 furring strips at $1.98 a piece for an eight foot board.
I cut and nailed every.single.one of these boards myself. It was a labor of love for sure. Each time I added a board I could see the finished room become clearer in my mind.
After all of the furring strips were up I decided I need bead board in the insets. I wasn’t exactly sure how I was going to cut those so precisely given all the outlets. That’s when Casey from House By The Bay left a great comment suggesting using Martha Stewart Bead Board Wallpaper. That girl is genius!
It looks so real and was a dream to work with. I’m looking for other places I can use this in my home. With the furring strips up and the bead board wallpaper in place, I needed to “finish” off the moulding. I made yet another trip to Home Depot to pick up many, many feet of cove moulding.
I have to confess, my dad did the cove moulding. It is tricky stuff where you have to have the angles just perfect, kind of like putting up crown. When it was all up and in place I caulked and filled nail holes like crazy. Then the magical moment. Paint! Everything is painted with Benjamin Moore’s Cloud White, including the vanity.
The cabinet hardware was a lucky find at Hobby Lobby. I went in specifically looking for a hanging lantern and walked out with these as well. It was literally a 10 minute shopping trip with Luke sleeping on my shoulder. Sometimes when you see the perfect thing you just “know”.
I’ve been dreaming of Art LaMay’s Rosette Spoonbills since I first saw them last spring at a local art festival. I just knew I had to put one of his prints in this room. The pink in this print is just so beautiful. My photos just don’t do it justice.
One of the things I want to do in this house is switch all the cheap builder grade finishes to something of more quality. I love a good door knob. We use door knobs in our homes so much that it really should be something lovely. I loved this knob from Weslock and couldn’t be more pleased with the dramatic change it made.
I wanted some new hooks for the wall and back of the bathroom door and was so ticked when I spotted these hooks in Lowes that mimic the shape of the knob. Like, seriously? How lucky was that!
Isn’t that towel just so sweet? I’ve fallen hard for Turkish towels and feel like the Turkish Towel Store has a great selection paired with reasonable pricing. Plus, they really do come from Turkey. My first attempt at purchasing them set off my fraud guard on my credit card because it was a charge from Istanbul. They are the real deal.
When I posted the room reveal I said you might not guess where these shelves are from…my garage. Seriously, ripped down off the garage wall just hours before the final reveal. Before that, they were from Ikea. I simply painted the silver metal pieces with my Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze and used the same BM Cloud White paint to give the shelves a weathered look.
I couldn’t have seen how to do all this without some great lighting. I have to tell you, I agonized over lighting because I just couldn’t find the perfect light. …Until I saw these at Lowes. They weren’t quite perfect though. They only came in brushed satin nickel. Hmmm…hello Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze.
Last but certainly not least…faucets. I really loved the curve of these with still a nod to the traditional. These Kingston faucets make me want to linger when I brush my teeth. I’m sure my dentist would approve.

I read every blog you post. Rarely do I leave a comment, however, I really love what you create. I was especially happy to see a source for the Turkish towels and signed up for a newsletter with them. I will order when I get moved and settled in a new home when my current home sells. I am sure there are a lot of us silent readers, however, today I want you to know I appreciate you and your blog. Blessings, Nancy
