What do you do when you buy a house that doesn’t have a fireplace? Normally not a big deal because the temperature most of the year here is warm, but no fireplace means no Christmas stocking holder.
That is a big deal for a 4 year old. Not having a fireplace is a really big deal for him. He’s not concerned about resale value…he’s concerned about Santa. How will he get in the house?
How will he know where the stockings are?
How is his sleigh going to work when we don’t have snow? And the questions go on and on.
So last Saturday I set out to solve this problem for my little 4 year old thinker. It was small business Saturday and I ran across the top to an old wash stand in the booth of one of my favorite vendors. I knew it would be perfect as a Christmas stocking holder.
I screwed in a few hooks and drilled spots for three coastal pulls I picked up at T.J. Maxx several months ago. I sewed some new stockings because we were a little bit of a mismatched Christmas stocking crew. Ten years with one child had made me feel comfortable having stockings monogrammed. Then along came Luke…and the old Pottery Barn stockings were no longer available.
I bought some letters at Wal Mart and gave them a little dab of paint and wrapped a little jute roping around them and glued on a seashell.
When I showed him my creation he said, “this is not too good”. Then I told him I put it right by the back patio door so Santa was sure to find it as soon as he came in and that I put an L on his stocking so he would know it was Luke’s stocking and his little eyes lit up. Now, every time someone comes over he takes them by the hand and shows him his stocking with the Shark’s Eye shell on it.
I think it is safe to say that Jolly Old St. Nick will leave him a few special treasures in this new stocking Christmas Eve.
What about you? I have learned there are two distinct camps in the Christmas Stocking world. Everyone’s stockings match or no one’s stocking matches. What do you do in your house? Are they color coordinated or is each one different? We all want to know.
Have a fantastic day!

Nancy, this is such a great idea for people that don’t have a fireplace. I love how you mixed different elements and texture for a layered look and those monogram ornaments are too cute. Hugs, CoCo

The holder is just darling and I love how you’ve mixed the fabrics in the stockings. When my kids were young we didn’t have a fireplace either. I remember making a stocking holder stand to resolve the problem. I also made matching stockings, but later on we had mix and match. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann

What a great idea, Nancy! My youngest is 11 but I still feel your pain-it was not so long ago that he would have had exactly the same questions as your little one! I love the pastel colors and the added shells. Truly beautiful. Thanks so much for linking up over at Vintage Charm! We hope you’ll join us again at this week’s party on Thursday morning! xoKathleen Charm Bracelet Diva {At Home}
