Are you vacationing at the beach this summer? If so, you might find yourself returning home with a bag full of shells. Today I have an apothecary seashell printable and a great way to display your beach treasures.
We’ve been going to the beach and collecting shells for years and years. Now, we live at the beach and I find myself coming home daily with treasures my 4 and 14 year old boys pick up on each visit. If you’ve gone to the beach with little ones, you know their definition of a treasured shell may not fit your conventional definition of a treasured shell.
On this summer’s trip I want to challenge you to look at each shell as a treasure. So many people walk the beach looking for that ONE perfect specimen of a hard to find shell when they are really missing all the beauty of the common shell. I don’t think I’ve met a shell I didn’t think was beautiful in one way or another. When each shell is singled out, it’s beauty shines through. That was my mission with this collection of shells. Let each shell have it’s own space so it can shine.
All of these shells, with the exception of the Olive shell, are common shells on Florida’s Gulf Coast. These are literally the shells you walk over trying not to hurt your feet as you walk down to the water. When isolated and displayed together, they have more impact.
Luke’s favorite shell to find is the Florida Fighting Conch. It doesn’t matter if they are in pristine condition or not, in his eyes, they are beautiful. This collection was from a few days at the beach this past spring. We do love picking up shells. How could I not display his treasures in some way?
Did I mention all of these shells are displayed in free jars? Yep. There are pickle jars, nacho cheese jars, honey jars, and jelly jars. I simply cleaned the stickers off the jars and spray painted all of the lids black. I like the look of hand written apothecary labels on the jars, but I know not everyone is comfortable with their writing. Don’t worry, I created a free printable you can use for your shells this summer.
I attached my labels with simple scrapbook adhesive and tied some twine and ribbon around the tops. So simple but so much better than putting a pile of shells in a bowl. The best part? You can keep adding to your collection by collecting new types of shells or adding to the collection you already have. I know I’ll continue to look for Olive Shells (one of my favorite).
I created an Apothecary Shell Printable you can use for your collection. Simply click this link Apothecary Seashell Printable and create your own display of shells.
Do you have a favorite shell? I would love to know what it is. Leave a comment. I read them all and by leaving a comment you validate my existence. 🙂

You are so sweet! I had a lot fun photographing this one. I photographed it outside and I’m pretty sure my neighbors think I’m crazy for taking a gazillion photos of some jars. 🙂

I have lived near the beach before, but not now. I have spent much time beach combing. I love the scotch bonnet, and the baby’s ear. Several years ago I got the same idea you have. So I started hunting apothecary jars at yard sales. It is amazing how many people put them in yard sales. But I don’t have mine labeled yet. I also have my blue sea glass in one and the green in another. My favorite beach find is a compass from a boat that washed ashore in Davis, NC. It still works.
