The 4th of July is right around the corner and I’m getting my party tablescape ready. For my U.S. friends, are you ready for a 4th of July party? I know I am!
I have a little Independence gift for you today…no it’s not my famed potato salad recipe (actually I don’t possess a single famed recipe for anything).
It’s not the key to keeping your hair fluffy and fabulous in the summer heat (if you know this secret please let me know).
I’m going to make you the smartest person at your 4th of July get together. Ready? Here we go.
Super smart action #1: Use the term usurpation casually in conversation. After all, Thomas Jefferson and his other 4 committee members used the term usurpation to describe Britian’s force over the colonies. Say something like…
“You know…Britian’s usurpation over the colonies really caused the colonies to declare their independence”…then in a total “mike drop” moment walk away to refresh your drink like it ain’t no thing that you throw around these tidbits of knowledge and vocabulary.
Super smart action #2: After filling up your plate with all the yummy desserts everyone has brought, hold your fork up in the air like the Statue of Liberty and proclaim, “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness!”
Then when everyone turns and stares you can tell them, “Thomas Jefferson was inspired by the writing of John Locke who declared all people are born with the right to have life, liberty, and property. Thomas just changed things up a bit.”
Super smart action #3: After the finale of the fireworks, sigh and casually say to those around you. “That was the best celebration of a break-up in the history of break-ups. It’s so great that we could remain friends”.
If anyone says, “whaaaa?”, you can inform them the Declaration of Independence was a formal break-up with Britian as the final step in establishing becoming our own country (recognition by other countries we were our own sovereign state).
There are four characteristics of a State:
- Must have territory CHECK
- Must have population CHECK
- Must have a form of government CHECK
- Must be sovereign (let the celebrations begin)
Have a fantastic 4th of July!
Now go wow them while you eat your 2nd helping of mandarin orange jell-o. 🙂

Really funny, I’ll have to try the usurpation statement, love the table setting . I think I will have to get some little flags, at the very least. Have a good time, say Hi to Marlin and the family. Cheryl
