I’m so excited to finally say that one room in our new house is complete. In my mind I am hearing choirs singing, the sunshine streaming though the window, and I may or may not be doing an awkward happy dance.
This room has such a different feel than any room I have created for him in the past. I flipped through a bunch of pictures to come up with a photo of my son’s room in our Georgia House tour. You may see some of the same elements in this room. I still love the soft blue of his old room. But, he specifically said he wanted a room of red, tan, and black.
He’s a “collector” and he just couldn’t part with some of the items that have been in his room since he was a wee little one. He collects old pulleys, any animal parts (antlers; string ray barbs etc…), and vintage dog statues. In fact, he can’t wait until he is old enough to be a volunteer at the local humane society. I fear that though…because he would love to bring home dog and cats galore.
I love the masculine feel this room has. It is such a departure from the rest of the house, which is going to go a little more coastal. I think it will grow with him through the years. We originally wanted to move him up to a full size bed, but the size of this room (10′ x 11′) would have made it feel too tight. In fact, the biggest challenge of this room was to make it live large, store all of his things without making it look too crowded, and to give it a real sense of style. One way I achieved this is by keeping all of the furniture low so the eye moves around the room without having to bounce up and down.
After finishing his night stand on the left side of his bed, I felt he needed something to balance the other side. I looked for a small option like a garden stool, but it just didn’t feel right. Then, while walking though JoAnn I saw this piece of wood and knew I could use it for a table top. I pulled an old Southern Living plant stand out of storage and put some poly on the wood. I love the rustic feel it puts into the room.
If you remember from the inspiration post for this room, this framed print was the jumping off point. We ran across it in a local market shop on consignment and he knew it had to go in his new room. I remember thinking, “Oh my how we are growing up”. No more cute construction trucks and cowboys.
Completing this room has given me more motivation to tackle the next room. The past few days, whenever I have felt like this house was never going to come together, I would walk into his room and just stand there. It is so nice to have one room exactly the way you want it.
If you missed the progress working up to the final version of this room you can catch it all week 1, week 2, and week 3. I can happily say that recycling many of his old elements kept the budget for this room under $300. I mean, really, that’s not much to take a room to completion.
Up next is going to be my toddler’s room. He fell in love with his brother’s quilt set from his little days and I am building a room around that. You know how I love textiles, so it should come as no surprise that fabrics have already been sourced and bought.
I’m sharing this on a lot of great blogs. These ladies have such inspiring images and tutorials you will want to check them out.

Congratulations Nancy! Isn’t it nice to have one room just the way you want it, and I bet your son is so happy with the results. I really like the buffalo check layer in the bedding, and that pharmacy lamp over the bed ~ perfect for reading. Thanks for linking up with the Something to Talk About link party too! Bwg ~~~

Thanks Coco. I love that wood table too. Funny thing is,he keeps putting the wood outside his room because the poly still smells. I hope it de-stinks soon. 🙂 Love the new link party series!

Nancy your son’s room looks so great! I love that he wanted that framed print for his room, and that you incorporated all of his collections into the design. I am working on my 16 year old’s room and it’s kind of nostalgic to pack away things he has outgrown, but the time has come! Thanks for sharing this room on Best of the Nest (you are inspiring me to get a move on with my project!)
