The other day while I was teaching my students about the Declaration of Independence, showing them how these great philosophers (Hobbes, Montesquieu, Locke) laid the foundation for Jefferson’s quill to pen one of the greatest documents in our history, I became so excited that I walked right out of my shoe.
My cute navy blue patent leather Michael Kors sandals that looked perfect with my blue and white striped linen shirt with navy monogram.
As it lay there on the floor in all it’s cuteness, I simply said “I’m so excited about Hobbes, Locke, and Montesquieu that I walked right out of my shoe!” and I kept teaching for the 1 minute before the bell rang because they were on the cusp.
The cusp of understanding something big and important.
It was an exciting minute, at least for me.
For me, knowledge and home décor should incite such excitement. So, when I spied these sconces at an interior designers estate sale the other week, I nearly walked right out of my shoes.
I’ll give you a minute to let that sink in. An interior designer’s estate sale.

I grabbed them and put them with the stash of things I was buying without ever considering where I was going to put them in my house.
Are you kidding? Stop to think about placement and whether I really really need them? Who has time for that?
With my shoes intact on my feet I quickly bought my items (more on that to come) and transported them home with the help of my fellow design enthusiast, S and our neighbor who has a truck.
After everything was safely in the house I laid my sconces out on my new dining room table and stared at them. Every day when I walked past them I would look at them lovingly, like a baby sleeping soundly in his crib. People would visit our home and remark on my sconces (still sitting on the dining room table) and just like a proud parent I would proudly gush about how perfect they are.
They sat, and sat, and sat until…
last Friday night.
I had taken my shoes off hours before and was sitting on my perfect forever sofa looking at my beautiful thrift store chairs and my wall with the shutters right next to the T.V. we don’t hide when it hit me.
The perfect spot. Like lightning I was out to the garage for two small nails and a hammer. One minute later they were up on the shutters and like those great philosophers who lived long ago, I was pleased with my idea.
I sat back down on the sofa, put my shoeless feet up on my short coffee table and sighed with satisfaction at my sconces. It was an inspired minute where I finally was able to understand something big and important…be patient and the inspiration will come.

Love those sconces – what a score! I love estate sales – I’ve gotten my best stuff from them!
Love your look. I recently purchased a 65″ uhdtv, but just had to think of a way to disguise it! I bought a French scene tapestry, built a frame slightly larger than the screen, stretched the tapestry and stapled it to the frame. Attached hangers, and it easily hangs over the tv when not in use! So much prettier than the giant blank screen!
I just discovered you, I have a pair of shutters just like those you hung your sconces on. Never thought to paint them and add sconces. Great idea! I’ll paint them and wait for inspiration via your blog.
