So there was this one time I set out to fix up our media room and all was going well. I was relaxing in a floaty at the beach, riding the waves in to shore feeling really good about my house and my life and the direction of my decor. I was singing that “la la la la la” song that Spongebob sings when he’s happy. We do a lot of Spongebob around here. Suddenly, the wind shifted and I couldn’t see the shore anymore.
I found myself caught in the riptide heading out to sea being pulled in a different direction. If you live near the ocean, you know that when you are caught in a riptide you swim parallel to the shore and resist the urge to fight it. That’s just what I did. Find out how it all turned out for me.
Okay, okay. I kinda just tricked you. I wasn’t literally in a riptide, it happened figuratively. I was caught in a design riptide. In fact, I’m still swimming parallel to the shore and my arms are getting kind of tired.
See, I live in an area that has an overwhelming amount of incredible thrift store merchandise. I could find something there every. single. day. (sometimes I do) Sometimes it’s just too easy. If you didn’t read my post about the super incredible finds I have made there you can click HERE..
I didn’t intend to work on a British Colonial Master Bedroom. Like a riptide, it caught me off guard.
Every time I frequented the thrift store some great treasure was there just waiting for me. I found the incredible grass cloth, bamboo, and shell prints on a fly-by visit and I literally just picked them up and bought them without really thinking. It was like finding lost pirate treasure on the beach with one of those metal detectors. All of my favorite things wrapped up into one piece of art.
I’m not fighting the riptide and have decided to just stick with the British Colonial Master Bedroom undertow. When the design practically falls into your lap, you have to just go with the flow…or the riptide in my case.
I just adore this little vintage plate. I found it tucked up on a shelf at the thrift with a little $3 tag on it. I love how the colors in it pick up on the colors in the shell print. It’s like I planned it or designed it or something. Nope. Not really. It just happened.
The fabric on the bed happened that way too. I dragged my boys down to Calico Corners to check out fabric and happened upon a remnant sale. I already knew I wanted to use the Pottery Barn Euro Shams. With two kids waiting to go to Krispy Kreme I just walked through the remnant tables and grabbed the fabrics that jumped out at me. Most of the remnants were less than $5 so it was “no-brainier”. I love the unexpectedness of it all. But you know I have a thing for textiles. 🙂
I’m going to keep riding my riptide as I glance toward the shore and my media room. It isn’t going anywhere. I have a lot more I want to accomplish before I head back to school in a just a few short weeks. I’m going to have to swim hard if I’m going to make it back to the shore before the school bell rings. I hope you are having a great week!
I really love your comments. My husband can attest to my squeals of delight when I’m notified of a comment…it’s actually a little embarrassing. Otherwise I really will feel like I’m stuck in a riptide far, far, away from shore. Thank you dear!

I found your blog a few months ago while searching for more information about Amelia Island. In the summer of 2013 my husband retired and we immediately started planning how we could leave snowy cold Ohio behind. Our children no longer live in the our area and where they are settled is too expensive for our retirement. They just requested we move near a good airport. We spent three months in your area over the last couple years and have found so much to love. Our house has been on the market for a while now. We hope for a sale so we can house hunt there soon. In the meantime I look at our collection of shells and sharks teeth and dream about thrifting in some of those shops. Thank you for my weekly dose of paradise

Pam, what a sweet comment. I’m so happy you are enjoying the blog. There is so much to love here. You will really love it when you finally settle on this sweet island. I’ll be hoping for a sale on your house. If that happens and you start looking for a place, shoot me an e-mail. I would love to know about it! slightlycoastal at g mail dot com.

What a lovely bedroom! I’m so glad I found your blog — I just began my own journey of transforming a beach cottage into our home away from home. What an exciting opportunity, isn’t it, to create a haven that is truly our own? Looking forward to doing a thorough search around here for inspiration, and I hope you will find some time to visit me at Sea Glass Cottage. All best!

Thanks Joanne. It’s great to find another fellow coastal blogger. I’ve been having fun sifting through marrying my own personal style with a coastal style. It has been an adventure.

Nancy, this bedroom is beautiful! Isn’t it funny how we randomly pick up things we love and it all comes together. I love shell prints and the way you have your white plates over the bed. Totally gorgeous. Hope your day has been a fun one, CoCo

Thank you so much CoCo. I think I’m becoming addicted to the local thrift stores because they keep delivering such great stuff into my home. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂
