Embroidery Hoop Wreath With A Coastal Twist

Every time I look on Pinterest I fall in love with the idea of an embroidery hoop wreath.  Today I’ll show you how easy they really are.

Do you ever set your mind to something and no matter what obstacles are in your way or your lack of expertise at something, you plow ahead anyway on a mission?  I’m sort of like that…okay not sorta…a whole lot like that.  I’m the type that hears, “You can’t….” and takes it as a personal challenge to prove that I can.

Sixth grade basketball was a lot like that for me.  All my friends were signing up and the chatter in the lunchroom was all about basketball practice and the coach and who could do a lay up.  I ran into the kitchen after school, grabbed a homemade chocolate chip cookie and declared right there in the kitchen that I wanted to play basketball!  My mother, not one to be alarmed by much, looked at me in a moment of stunned disbelief and then quietly said.  “Alright, we can sign you up tomorrow.”

You see, I had been a gymnast my whole life and was perfectly suited for it.  I was short, muscular, and strong,  I never paused to consider how tall a basketball player should be or the fact that you run from one end of the gym to the other over and over and over and over….These mere details escaped me.

It sounded like so much fun when my friends were talking about it and everyone was signing up.  Why wouldn’t I want to join in?  Practice went fine.  Then, the first game rolled around.  Suddenly I felt like I was living in the land of giants.  These girls seemed to be all arms and stamina and sweat….yuck.  Gymnasts might sweat, but we don’t sweat on each other.  I don’t think I even scored one basket.  I quickly learned that just because everyone is doing it…it might not be for me.

So when I saw embroidery hoop wreathes everywhere I stopped and considered.  Is this a project for me?  Can I accomplish it?  My track record with wreath making is a little less than stellar.  I decided this might be the easy wreath project I had been waiting for.  It seemed to suit me.  So I threw caution to the wind and signed up…(figuratively).  I invested in the wreath making stuff so I was committed and I am so glad I did it.  This really is sooooo easy.

How To Make An Embroidery Hoop Wreath

Gather up your supplies (some affiliate links provided for convenience)

• 10″ Embroidery Hoops (pack of 6) 
• Different types of greenery
• Starfish or really anything of your choosing
• Stain
• Double Faced Satin Ribbon
• Glue and Glue Gun
• Gold Leaf Paint

Step 1

Stain the embroidery hoops with the stain and let dry overnight.  I didn’t add a sealer to mine.  I just stained them and let them dry in the garage due to fumes.  I also painted the starfish with the gold leaf paint and let them dry overnight.

Step 2

With your glue gun begin attaching greenery to the bottom of the “wreath.”  I ended up putting the gold hardware of the embroidery hoop on the bottom so the starfish would cover it up.  That’s a personal choice.  Try to use a variety of greenery to give it some interest.  I used these little picks from the store At Home.  Three to four picks came in each package for $1.99 so it made it super affordable.  I looked for a link to these online but couldn’t find one.

You can see in the picture below that I had a little variety.

Step 3:

Once your glue has cooled and your picks are on the wreath securely, add the starfish or whatever else you want to be the main focus of the wreath.  A faux flower, ornament, or some jingle bells would also be really cute.  I hot glued the dickens out of the starfish to make sure he was secure on it.  If I would have had some stronger glue on hand I might have used that.  Once dry, tie onto a chair or hang on the door with some pretty double faced satin ribbon.

Isn’t that so easy?  I might just take up making an embroidery hoop wreath for every season.  So simple and so cute.  Not every project I attempt works out…kinda like basketball.  You win some and some you never even hit the backboard.  This embroidery hoop wreath project was nothin’ but net.
