Don’t Be Green With Envy Over This Green Dresser

Every time I see a brightly colored painted dresser on Pinterest it always catches my attention.  When my youngest, Luke, stated he wanted a “greeeeen” bedroom I had to find ways to pull in his love of green without painting the walls a primary green.  This dresser was a victim of this latest move and had a few scratches on it.  It was a prime candidate for a fun green dresser paint job.  Your not going to believe how it looks dressed in a fresh coat of green!

I mixed my own chalk paint using Calcium Carbonate because I wanted a specific green color, Benjamin Moore’s Green With Envy (hence the title of this post).  Mixing your own chalk paint is simple.  I will say, the paint doesn’t feel as rich as some of the already mixed chalk type paints, but when you want a specific color it is a good option.

I just love the bit of brightness this green dresser brings to the room.  Plus he now feels like he has a green bedroom even though there is not a speck of green paint on the walls.

I’m really digging the pop of the green dresser in the middle of the two darker bookcases.  Before, it just felt like there was just way too much brown happening.  Tan walls, brown bookcases, brown dresser, tan carpet, brown bed etc…meh.  Now, there is a freshness to the room.

I haven’t been in Kirkland’s in a really, really long time.  I popped in the other day because I had exhausted all of my usual spots to hunt for a mirror to go over his dresser.  I spotted these round mirrors, and instantly knew they would be perfect going up the wall above his green dresser.  They come in a pack of five for $19.99.  I bought two packs and I think it was $40 well spent.

My boy loves his trucks.  See the empty spot down on the lower left side?  While I was taking these shots he was running his dump truck through the house.  To make the green dresser not feel like an odd piece on the wall, I tied the green into the bookcases by lining the back with green fabric.  This was a really easy project that I wish I could share with you.  Let’s just say there was a battle between my cell phone and my washing machine, and the washing machine won.  It was a really simple project and I had taken a lot of photos (grrr!).  The wordy version will have to do.  I taped together white poster board to fit the back of the bookcase.  Then, I covered it with the fabric and secured it on the back with white duck tape.  It only took me about an hour to line the back of these bookcases with a cute fabric.

I had fun styling the top of his dresser.  In the “before” photo you can see the lamp was a bright green.  I simply sprayed it orange to pull more of the orange I am using in his room onto his dresser.  I think that lamp has been at least 4 colors in its lifetime.

Luke is crazy for Wall-E and loves this little Wall-E robot so I thought I would feature him front and center.  I keep the current books we are reading handy and put the other books higher up on the shelf so little hands don’t pull them all on the floor.  As a teacher, I have a very organized way of keeping track of the books we are reading.  I’ll share my book organizing tricks in a future post.  We always have books of the “season” out.

Speaking of organization, I thought it was a prime opportunity to organize this little green dresser.  Since I had it emptied out I went through all his clothes to make a donation pile and decided to use plastic shoe boxes to contain all of his play clothes.  No more digging to the bottom of the drawer to find the t-shirt that matches!

I did the same thing with his long pants and shorts.  Over on the side are his swimsuits and beach hats.  I didn’t take a photo of his top drawer that contains his unmentionables.  You get the idea.  Pajamas, socks, and underwear are divided out.

I still have a few really inspired projects to finish in this room.  You can see a glimpse of one in the mirrors on his wall.  His rug should arrive shortly and I need to finish a planked wall treatment with a globe light.  I hope to reveal the room soon.  That will make two bedrooms complete in the Slightly Coastal 2015 Year Of The Bedroom series.  I already finished my oldest son’s room which you can check out HERE.
