Wow, this was a really busy week. The hubby was out-of-town on business so the boys and I were on our own. I’m not going to lie, it was a challenge getting very much accomplished this week. I did finish up a few projects and I am really starting to get excited about how the room is coming together. I started out taking his old nightstand and giving it a major refresh.
Sometimes I sort of flake out and forget to take a before picture because I am so excited to get started on a project. Thank goodness I remembered before it was totally painted. This was part of a set we bought him when he moved to his big boy bed at 3 years old. He just turned 13, so it has already taken ten years of abuse in his room. I thought at first I was going to look for something “new” or a thrift store treasure instead of using his own nightstand, but then I was inspired by this picture.

Although his nightstand isn’t a campaign style, I thought it could work. I am still considering adding the extra brass pieces to the corners, but I felt the pulls that were already on his Craftsman style nightstand would translate. I painted the whole thing in black chalk paint and then put clear wax on it. I really wanted to use Krylon’s Goldleaf spray paint to do the pulls, but it was literally sold out everywhere I went. Not wanting to drive too far for it, I decided to take a chance and use Martha Stewart’s Metallic paint in Copper. Overall, I am pleased with how it turned out.
Adding the black to the piece I think brought it together with everything else that is going on in the room, plus it covered up a ton of blemishes from years of use.
I also picked up the fabric I dropped off previously at Lollipops Quilt Shop and am so pleased with the monogram they put on the fabric. I couldn’t wait to get home and stitch his pillow for his bed right up. I asked them to make it a bold/manly monogram and adore how it has a sort of collegiate feel to it.
If you remember the inspiration board post from a while back, you may remember the equestrian inspired pillow with the buckles and leather trim. I set out to create something that had the same feel to it. I debated using some leather straps with rings on them from the purse making section of the craft store, but in the end fell in love with a belt trim. I am thrilled with how this pillow turned out and think it brings that preppy/equestrian feel to his room.
It was really easy to do. I bought rings from the purse making section and used two needle nose pliers to help me intertwine them. Once that was done, I simply sewed the trim onto the rings and then stitched the whole pillow together.
I am also pulling together some accessories for his room. For Christmas he received this adorable vintage dog. I love how he looks and the fact that he is a little worn. Well loved, for sure.
I hope by this time next week to have at least a few more things of the list. I want to have all the big pieces in place but am having trouble with the bookshelf for the space. Here is what is left to accomplish:
- New black and white sheets
- Window Treatment
- Black and white prints matted and framed
- Special silhouette project
- Procure some fabulous lamps for his dresser
- Crown molding for the room
- Molding for the window
- Custom organization for his closet
- Hang pictures and finish styling
Whew! A lot left to do! I am thinking about doing an Ikea hack for his shelving unit because I just can’t find what it is I really want. Check back next week to see if I have made more progress!
I would love to know what you think. Please leave me a comment. Thanks!

Wow! Thanks! I have been working on installing a blog roll onto my site. I don’t have it up and running yet because I want the one that tells the title of the latest post and the time since last post. Like I said, it’s a learning process. Thank you so much for adding me. I love your blog too! I will be sure to add you as soon as I figure it all out 🙂
