Welcome! I am calling 2015 the “Year of the Bedroom”. We have four bedrooms in this house and I am determined to have all four bedrooms looking magazine worthy by this time next year. It is my big house goal (along with a few other small ones). I am starting with my oldest son’s room and will be giving you weekly updates on my progress in his room until I can finally reveal the whole thing. I am secretly hoping this keeps me on track. I tend to get distracted and work on projects all over the house at the same time. Tunnel vision…that’s what I am aiming for. We’ll see if I am successful in my focus. If you remember, this was the inspiration board I created for his room.
He specifically asked for a room of red, black, and tan. I am throwing a little white in with it just to give it a bit of light. If you follow me on Instagram, you would have seen the fabric I picked up recently at my local Calico Corners. Just to fill you in, here they are.
I had full intentions of making a headboard with nail head trim. That is, until I ran across a $10 headboard at my local thrift store that just wouldn’t let me walk away. It was a sad little headboard stuck against the wall behind a TV stand. The faux bamboo caught my eye and I just knew there was potential. I couldn’t let him just sit there for what would really be the price of a good cocktail (that’s how I judge everything at the thrift store…in reference to a good cocktail) and thought he had to come home with me for there was some black paint was in his future. Here he is in his sad little state.
After a good cleaning with some vinegar and hot water, his little faux bamboo was shiny and ready for a coat of black chalk paint.
After a few coats of black chalk paint and a coat of clear wax I was ready to tackle the inset portion of the headboard. I knew I didn’t want to stay with the plastic feeling woven look so I bought some heavy-weight woven beige fabric. I used Tacky Spray on the headboard and then simply smoothed it on like I was wallpapering it to the inset. I used a very sharp razor blade to cut the fabric around the edges to give it a nice clean finish.
I love how it turned out! It’s the real jumping off point for his room. I also was able to finish a little bit of sewing and sent one of his bed pillows off to the monogram shop. Here is a sneak peek at it in his room. I will keep working on the room and updating you as I progress on it each week until I have a the big reveal. It’s so exciting to see one room really coming together.
The woven fabric gives it such a great texture and the black really pops.
I love that it is low on the wall because his bedroom does not have high ceilings. Keeping the headboard low and putting art on the wall above it will visually make the room seem taller.
The bedding is going to be re-vamped along with the art on the walls. It is going to be perhaps the most eclectic room I have ever created. Stay tuned for longhorns, equestrian, vintage pulleys, buffalo check, dogs, and cheetah print. Crazy? Yup. But I think it will be crazy in a good way. Stay tuned for more!
I’ve shared this post at a lot of great link parties like:

Thanks Gloria! I’m having so much fun doing this makeover. My oldest hasn’t had a decorated room in a few years because of the building process etc… It will be great to have a “finished” house again.
